Can anyone solve this "code square"?

Can't sleep, so was looking at old pics from my gallery, and found this picture I took, of a code someone in work put on the notice board ages ago. It bugged me for a while at the time, but I'd no clue and had forgotten about it.

Any ideas? Not just what the message is, but how you worked it out too.

Can anyone solve this "code square"?

"a code coded message" that should have said.

I think what's throwing me off is the word square, when all I see are rectangles, or squares with letrers left over? (Or maybe that's the idea?).

I know who put it up, but he claimed to have no recollection of it, when I got a chance to ask him (and it was gone by then), so there's a slight chance it was made/put up while he was drunk and is actually just a random load of tosh/unsolvable.

I can’t really read the handwriting well
Enough to work it properly. At first glance it looks like a substitution cypher. So you just need to look for common letters and short words and work from there.

I typed it into a cypher solver, but got nothing. There may be typos in my string, though. Some letters were hard to decipher.

You could always send it to GCHQ as a lunchtime quiz.

(Unless you already work at GCHQ.)

NoHunGosh · 05/08/2020 10:34

Wonder if the solution starts: 'This quiz has been turning up..'

TeenPlusTwenties · 05/08/2020 10:44

Lady did you try vertically as well?

DadDadDad · 05/08/2020 11:10

@NoHunGosh - I think you are on to something. It feels like there are words jumbled in there without any cypher substitution.

A simple cypher doesn't seem right, eg the one-letter word "Y" appears on line 2 but Y doesn't appear anywhere else. Also line 2 starts with a word with a repeated letter, which would be unusual.

BalloonSlayer · 05/08/2020 11:35

You can tell by the way the letters jump up and down that they have been entered in a different order than top left onwards like you write or type.

DadDadDad · 05/08/2020 12:03

@LadyofMisrule - I think 4th line starts CEP not CGP - compare how they write their Es and Gs in other places.

Jackparlabane · 05/08/2020 12:17

I think you have to read certain columns only - the top line includes 'this quiz' and then the letters in the same columns on row 2 make 'hasn't',though row 3 then doesn't work. Perhaps if the whole thing is one long line you can cross out extra letters to leave a message?

This quiz has been great fun apart from its [. ] patrons

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 05/08/2020 12:26

Just trying to work out the missing word

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 05/08/2020 12:28

Ignore fun
This quiz has been great...

Someone has written a message then filled in nonsense around it

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 05/08/2020 12:31

It’s hard to read so I may have misread the odd letter but the it’s a hidden message rather than a code.
