What can I do with a whole Edam? It's massive!

Obiously a large chunk of it will just be munched with crackers....but what can I do with the rest of a huge Edam? It's not right for cheese sauces etc.... any ideas? I want to do some cooking for the freezer (as we're a bit skint) so could really do with making use of the bloody thing!

Fondue? It’s a bit mild for cooking with, really. Bowl it over here. We’ll eat it. Smile

How do you accidentally end up with a whole Edam anyway?

FightMilkTM · 04/08/2020 13:08

I would just section it up and freeze it. Boring I know!

sadpapercourtesan · 04/08/2020 13:08

That's the problem Arrietty, it's not the best cheese for most recipes. Am sure DS2 would happily just eat it all, but it feels like a waste.

We were given it, bizarrely!

From a quick google it looks like, in parts of a Europe, you dip a wedge in flour, beaten egg and breadcrumbs and fry it. It looks awesome. There’s an oven cooked version in the first link.

Agree with Fight - cut some of it into manageable slabs, or grate and decant into bags, and freeze.

It may not be the best cheese for most recipes but it certainly melts well and has a mild taste - you can definitely make a cheese sauce with it! Macaroni cheese? cheese souffle? grate and use as topping on pasta bakes, jacket potatoes, chili con carne, enchiladas or fajitas?

AuntyPasta · 04/08/2020 13:23

I’m off to buy Edam and make tartare sauce.

YgritteSnow · 04/08/2020 13:23

@AuntyPasta that sounds amazing 😋

Do that OP and let us know how it goes.

AuntyPasta · 04/08/2020 13:25

This is why I voted remain. We have so much (cheese based knowledge) to gain from closer links with Europe.

ArriettyJones · 04/08/2020 13:26

Tartare sauce made with Edam? What did I miss? Confused

Here you go. Everything from toasties to cookies.

ArriettyJones · 04/08/2020 13:29

Ignore me. It took three goes to get the recipe to load. Blush

BaronessBomburst · 04/08/2020 13:30

Does it have a black rind, or a red one?
Edammer doesn't have to look and taste like plastic you know! You might have been given a mature one.

LittleMissRedHat · 04/08/2020 13:33

Edam freezes really well, just cut into the size you'd usually buy and get out when you need it.
