When your 5yo is in the bath...

Where are you?

Do you supervise throughout or check in.

I check in and then wondered if that's risky.

DS2 is 4.5 and I am pottering around listening to him throughout and popping my head in if he stops chatting (he’s one for vocalising his bath games). DS2 is 7.5 and we leave him to it...I think that started at about 6.5.

So I’d be on the same floor as him but not necessarily in the room.

Shinygreenelephant · 03/08/2020 23:08

I supervise and play with him like 90% of the time but do potter in and out a little bit getting PJs out etc, never out the room for more than about 30 secs at a time and only ever next door. I always feel a bit nervy about it though, definitely couldnt relax say sitting in the room next door even though hes VERY loud in there so I know he's ok

Pottering about in the next room, probably either tidying or hanging laundry. I'd make sure I didn't have radio or TV on, so I can hear what going on, and pop my head round the door now and then.

We have twins 2.5y, so 5yo DD is often minimally supervised in the bath. We are in and out and often call to her but not watching 100% of the time. It's not ideal but it's all we can manage.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/08/2020 23:18

Keeping an ear out and popping in and out. My brain is naturally highly suspicious when children go quiet... even on dry land...

HalfBearOtherHalfCat · 03/08/2020 23:26

My five year old pretty much never stops talking, and he's extremely loud. So I just potter about within earshot, which is basically most of the house! Then if he ever goes quiet I stick my head round the door to make sure he is fine. Quiet usually means nefarious doings anyway, so I typically do hurry to heck on him if he ever stops yammering - water or no water!

LittleHootie · 03/08/2020 23:36

Ok sounds like I'm pretty much doing what the majority do. Tonight I got engrossed with reading something and when I walked to the bathroom to get him out i had a little stomach sinking moment thinking "fuck how long since I checked on him."

He was fine.

Hanging up or sorting out the laundry nearby in the next room & popping in / head around the door. Can usually hear chatter or singing

BillyAndTheSillies · 03/08/2020 23:48

DS1 is 4.5, sometimes I'll have a chat with him while he's in the bath, or clean some of the bathroom while he's in it. Usually I'm getting DS2 ready for bed or in the bedroom next door doing laundry.

Like most others on the thread, DS1 chats the whole way through his bath so I generally know he's fine just by the constant chatter or singing.
