Not all Cornish people hate tourists

I'm getting rather frustrated that all the news sites are reporting on clashes with locals, locals say stay home etc.

They are exasperating the situation, everyone I have spoken to are happy that people are coming down.

The attitude of a minority of tourists for example saying 'they've come down to get away from that Covid stuff' is what's upsetting people not the people actually coming down.

They also keep showing photos of people on the beaches that while they are busy, there is space between people.

If you're sensible please come on down, please don't listen to the news and decide to stay away forever.

It's such a shame that the media is constantly showing us negative stories, and thank you for letting those of us from other parts of the country know that not all of the people from Cornwall feel this way.

I have a lot of extended family living in Cornwall. My family originate from there. A couple of them own "tourist shops" like an ice cream parlour and a souvenir shop. They rely on tourism.

Thank you for saying this. I’m in Newquay at the moment and It is glorious weather. Fistral beach has lots of space between people. I’ve not been into town, so can’t comment on that, but the supermarket was fine and hand sanitiser, masks and social distancing was all in place.

Thanks OP. DH is currently driving DC down there to stay with his parents for a week (who live there). FIL has been shielding so DH/DC will of course be careful and sensible, but they do plan to get out and about a bit. I’m pleased to hear not all the locals will hate them for this!

Thank you for this, We are coming for a week next month (booked last year before Covid) and i was getting a bit worried with all the stories you keep hearing- Not just Cornwall, but other areas too. It's nice to know that it is in fact, the minority. I apologise on behalf of the not so well behaved tourists too. I also live in a tourist area and feel the same way as you OP-Love seeing people enjoy where we live, but please be sensible and clean up after yourselves :)

its a place where there is barely any money outside of tourist season, so the ones that do hate tourists are going to have to suck it up tbh. They may own their house but they dont own the entire area.

We came back from a week in Cornwall recently and we had a brilliant time. Everyone welcoming and friendly. So glad we went as the world felt ‘normal’ again.
V easy to distance on the beach.

My experience is that most Cornish people don’t dislike tourists at all, they are an important part of the Cornish economy and the high season only lasts 8 or 9 weeks anyway. The county is a much quieter and more pleasant to live in or visit from September to June.

The people who really are widely disliked and resented are, of course, second home owners.

Motherofmonsters · 03/08/2020 12:52

I'm glad that I can reassure people that are coming down here and glad to hear positive storied of people visiting.

I'm sure the media are priming up for next year to comment on numbers visiting if they go down.

I have family in cornwall and was down there for a week I am in south west anyway .
Most of the locals i spoke to have no problem with sensible ones but on certain places the local
Council have decided not to open toilets etc which is leading to problems
I found most people being sensible bit always a minority that just don't seem to care

Yep. Higher house prices have meant higher rental prices and I have seen my Dsis (Cornish born and bred) struggle to find somewhere to live for months because of this. At one point she was sleeping in her car. She has DC and grandchildren in Cornwall so of course she wants to be near them. Her earnings are limited because very few jobs in Cornwall command high wages. All so high wage earners in other areas can have their little bolt hole by the sea. I feel for people in areas like that who can never hope to own their own place.

In regards to tourism I think the people resented are the ones who behave like dicks! Just because a place relies on tourism doesn't mean they should have to put up with any old shitty behaviour. Respectful tourists are treated respectfully.

I have been put off Cornwall by the posters on here - not the media!
