Has anyone got this thing to work all the time?

Ours just vanishes for days and then randomly disappears again. It's plugged into our TV and is used from phones (Android and iOS) as well as laptops for streaming Netflix and iPlayer.

We've tried all the 'fixes' - rebooting, rebooting the router, restarting phones, got a WiFi extender etc but still just vanishes. So metimes we can access it from one device but not others. Sometimes I get the cast symbol for iPlayer but not Netflix or the other way round too - how can it be there for one and not the other? Does it not like my programme choice?!

Any ideas?

DP has the radio one, not the TV one - he struggles to control it with his iPhone. My Android phone copes much better. In fact he seems to have given up on it and given it to dd2 and her Motorola!

We've got 2 chromecasts and we've never had any problems, so no help for you what-so-ever! Used daily with both android and iphone/ipad. Only time I couldn't connect to them was when dh had fiddled around with the wifi. Hopefully someone will know more!

StandardLampski · 03/08/2020 11:57

We have had one for years.
Works fine generally from our phones, but not the tablet. Dont think I've tried it from laptop

But yes- every so often it just doesn't pick up...not often though

angel0071987 · 03/08/2020 12:03

You sure they on the same wifi network? If we disconnect and accidental our phone connect to work hub instead of home Wi-fi it won't work as need to be on same newtwork

DaphneFanshaw · 03/08/2020 12:24

Yes, ours work really well.
Sorry not much help.

Dissimilitude · 03/08/2020 12:31

If there's an issue with a Chromecast, it's can be an issue with Chromecast interacting with your router / hub, rather than the chromecast itself. I've had all kinds of weird Chromecast issues over the years, some of which were pretty technical and a pain to resolve.

At one stage, I had an issue with my chromecast where it absolutely saturated my home network, forcing other devices to drop off it.

Generally, modern Chromecast and modern router will be fine and work seamlessly, but you'll get unlucky sometimes.

Dissimilitude · 03/08/2020 12:32

Bottom line - the chromecast is trying to do some clever stuff, and the sheer variety of home networking equipment means that someone somewhere is going to have some setup it doesn't like.

If it's not a straightforward wifi strength issue, it's likely some weird incompatibility with some aspect of your network.

sirfredfredgeorge · 03/08/2020 13:42

Power, check the USB power supply you're using is up to it - are you just running it off a TV USB port, if so that's quite likely to be rubbish.

Seeline · 03/08/2020 21:25

All connected to the same network.
Use a separate power supply.

Same here, mine worked fine tonight and i bet it’ll be fine all week but come Saturday night when i actually want to watch something, nope Shock drives me insane, no idea why!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 03/08/2020 22:33

Ours has a mind of its own, and subscribes to the cat method of doing exactly as it fucking wants.

PARunnerGirl · 03/08/2020 22:40

How old is your WiFi router? My chromecast was Exactly like this and it was SO annoying. After 5 years I changed my WiFi provider and got a new router and suddenly chromecast is working perfectly. Why it wouldn’t be the case with anything else, I have no idea. Confused

Seeline · 04/08/2020 19:13

@incywincy. I shall think of it like a cat from now on - makes it less frustrating 😆

Could be the router - it works fine for everything else, but is probably older than 5 years.
