I really miss my library

I used to pop along most weeks. Dcs have often done activities there and we’d all pick up books regularly.
I’ve used libraries all my life and just find them rather soothing and calm.
I hope they open up soon.

This!

Takeittotheboss · 02/08/2020 00:04

Exactly!

Ellmau · 02/08/2020 00:13

Hampshire libraries are open - reduced hours, but you can still browse the shelves for your next lot of books.

lostlalaloopsy · 02/08/2020 00:14

I could have written your post!! We usually go as a family every week, spend many Saturday afternoons there when it's wet or we have no other plans. Our local library is hoping to reopen in the next 2 weeks, but it's only for click and collect. So no more browsing for books 😩😩

FloydWasACat · 02/08/2020 12:04

I work in a library. Reduced hours. People aren't allowed to browse, but they can use the PCs with masks on.

We are offering a service where customers can order books online and we will get them off of the shelves and book a time to bring them to them at the door. Kid's section is also closed.

I miss people using the library and at the moment I am effectively the library bouncer on my shifts sitting outside having to stop people from coming in and explaining how we are working at the moment.

It's sad.

TheMaskedHorror · 02/08/2020 19:27

That’s a good service though I want to just walk around one, enjoy the peacefulness, take my time with and just choose a book.
I just find it all so grounding and miss it.

me too...I've tried audiobooks but not that keen as quite often the voice has been wrong

I've read and re-read everything in the house and am getting a bit twitchy

Doveyouknow · 02/08/2020 19:39

Me too, we normally go every couple of weeks and I miss our trips. It seems odd you can wander around a book shop but not a library. The rules make no sense Confused

hanahsaunt · 02/08/2020 19:44

Gosh, yes! We can order online and are emailed a collection slot. It's really hard to choose books without just browsing. I love our library and find them remarkably good for the soul.

confusedofengland · 02/08/2020 20:56

I volunteer & work in my village library. We are open normal hours ie every day except Sunday. Customers are welcome to come in for 15 minutes to return books/dvds, browse & select new ones. There will also be 1 PC available for 45 minute slots from tomorrow.

We cannot currently offer any of the many groups & events we usually host, and they are sorely missed, but there are always books!

HeyMicky · 02/08/2020 21:05

Me too. The DDs also miss it

Our library has an online option to download to iPad or kindle which has helped a lot. Yours probably will as well. Not quite the same selection of books but pretty good.

theotherfossilsister · 02/08/2020 21:07

I work in a library and miss my colleagues and borrowers so badly. Hopefully we are reopening soon, but I don't know if it will be the same. It's a good atmosphere, and so welcoming and inclusive to the whole community.

Starlightstarbright1 · 02/08/2020 21:09

Our local library is opening 10 th though no idea of conditions

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 02/08/2020 21:10

Ours has been sold to be made into offices. So many services for children and elderly slowly dropped away and then our county council felt they needed a shiny new head office so all the money went on that. Our county has lost several libraries including ours and the closest one is inaccessible to me.
Weirdly sad about it

Yoyomar · 02/08/2020 21:14

I missed library books so much during lockdown. I normally read loads of books and couldn't justify buying that many online. I ended up reading books via the library app on my phone, which was not the same at all.

Our library reopened a few weeks ago, albeit reduced opening hours, and I didn't realise they hadn't all opened. I feel so sad for all of you whose libraries aren't yet open Sad

TheMaskedHorror · 03/08/2020 00:59

@iamtheoneandonlyyy that is really sad to close down several libraries. We need more services for those groups of people, not less.
