Why has my cat suddenly taken to shitting in the utility room sink?!

It's weird. He seems perfectly healthy. We have a cat flap, plus doors and windows are permanently open in this weather and with one of us always here.

No change in diet or circumstances. He's getting on a bit but surely it would be easier for him to amble out of the door than to spring up onto the draining board and crouch over the sink?

I'm impressed by his using the sink though as opposed to random places over the house!

Do you have a litter tray?

WinterAndRoughWeather · 01/08/2020 14:16

Does he eat dry food? My cat started peeing in the bath at one time and it turned out he had crystals / stones in his urethra. Apparently this can happen to male cats on dry food and the coolness of the ceramic soothes them a bit. We’ve had ours on wet food ever since and it hasn’t happened again.

I'd get him checked by the vet - any change in behaviour should be checked out just to make sure.

Gose · 01/08/2020 14:19

He's on wet food. We do have a litter tray - he was using it quite consistently, and as far as I can tell he still does for weeing.

My Nan’s cat always shit in the bathroom sink when it was cold or wet outside because it couldn’t be arsed going out. Totally grim.

Cats are weird creatures and very particular, they often show unhappiness this way so either unsettled emotionally or has an illness.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 01/08/2020 14:35

My cat liked to unravel the wrapping paper in a large walk in cupboard and poo in it before unravelling more wrapping paper. Literally leaving me a present! Grin
Turned out she was diabetic, so I would get you pet checked for illness just in case.

Bobismyfriend · 01/08/2020 14:37

Because cats do what the fuck they like! Mine used to shit in the bath sometimes when she got fussy about her litter tray being completely clean before she would go in in
Also I did wonder if it was because I sometimes used the same cleaning stuff for the bath and the litter tray so it smelt the same? Who knows. Cats are weird.

Gose · 01/08/2020 14:38

Oh that's interesting about your cat being diabetic Dance. I guess that could be a possibility.

Thanks all for the replies. I'll get him booked in at the vets.

One of my cats went through a phase of shitting in the bath. There was nothing wrong with her she just liked it. She went to live with a friend of mine because she hysterically hated my other cat. He has 5 acres of woodland and she lives him more than anyone and she has stopped doi g it since she went there. It was stress living with another cat she hated.

Crankley · 01/08/2020 15:09

Try training your cat to use the loo: There are several other videos, including one where the cat also flushes. Grin

Gose · 01/08/2020 15:23

Crankley I'll have a go at toilet training the cat, when I've cracked it with my sons. I'm not holding my breath ... :)

Stress? Is there a new cat in the neighbourhood?

Gose · 01/08/2020 16:23

I haven't seen one Dog. Maybe it's lockdown boredom or something!

I reckon the cat will be easy to train in comparison to two boys - that's a whole nother problem which will keep you busy for the foreseeable future. Smile

This reminds me of my cat! When her litter box wasn't up to her pristine standards she used to go in the shower cubic a pee perfectly over the drain hole! 😂
Bobismyfriend · 02/08/2020 09:31

Dancewithyourballoon Grin that's some good aim your cat had Grin. When one of my cats had kittens, I was toilet training my 2 year old and they would sometimes pee in his potty!

Bluesheep8 · 02/08/2020 09:34

My cat started pooing in the bath when he was upset about the fact that DP started to have to go and work in an office when he was previously WFH. Puss didn't like suddenly being left alone all day I think.
I just made sure that the bathroom door was shut so he couldn't get in there. I suppose at least it's easy to spot and to clean when It's in a bath or a sink rather than behind furniture. Could you cover the sink with something? I'm guessing something outside the house has upset or stressed your cat, a new cat in the area maybe?

TellySavalashairbrush · 02/08/2020 09:38

Take them for a check up. My cat started doing this before they were diagnosed with cancer (not to say it has to be so drastic) worth making sure.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/08/2020 10:00

Try a second tray, some want a tray for wee and a tray for poo.

Grim is expecting your cat to poo outside - usually in some's garden. Tell me, do you prefer indoor or outdoor toilets, or none at all?
Fanciedachange1 · 02/08/2020 14:47

Had a female cat that used to wee in the bath at times. The vets worked out that she had a uti and the cool ceramic bath gave her some comfort.

RachelGreep87 · 02/08/2020 21:16

Could it be your DH playing a prank?

Toddlerteaplease · 02/08/2020 22:01

My parents cat poos in their shower if he's upset. He is very highly strung though!
