Can someone please tell me what he has done to deserve a peerage? Yes, I know he's the pm's brother, but surely there has to be an official reason?

Can't for the life of me think what it could be.

And Lebedev ffs. House of Lords should be abolished in favour of an elected upper house - it's getting ridiculous. 200 more in the Lords than in the Commons. Utterly self serving and crass in the extreme.

mornington222 · 31/07/2020 18:49

I know to be the brother (or sister or any relative) of the worst Prime Minister in history deserves sympathy, but not a peerage.

FraughtwithGin · 31/07/2020 18:51

I must admit I was confused, when I saw the announcement as the beginning of August is not a traditional time to award honours etc., is it?
Personally, I think the old system of hereditary peerages (noblesse oblige) and life peerages for those, who have made significant contributions, was actually better than the current system.
I see no point in trying to elect an upper house, as there would not be the mix of knowledge and experience required, it would just be like the US, whoever has the most cash to flash gets elected.

SheepandCow · 31/07/2020 18:56

I agree with @FraughtwithGinraught
Was just coming on to say the same thing. I think the old system worked better than what we have now.

I'd understand it more if he'd given a peerage to his dad. Stanley's spent years campaigning on environmental issues.

CakeMiddleton · 31/07/2020 18:57

Has former SpeakerJohn Bercow's peerage been blocked?

thistimelastweek · 31/07/2020 19:00

Is this the same No who walked away from his brother's cabinet?
What's the reason/pretence behind this? And why is Jo compromising his principles now?

mathanxiety · 31/07/2020 19:00

FraughtwithGin, take a look at the Irish Senate, how it is composed and who votes for its membership.

Not all elected upper houses come into being as a result of money.

thistimelastweek · 31/07/2020 19:01

Jo not No!
But he should have said no.

Medievalist · 31/07/2020 19:32

I can't see anything^^ at all that would justify this. He's had a very mediocre political career. May as well give one to Rachel - she's probably done more 🤷‍♀️ Or maybe Stanley for his stellar reality tv career.

To give one to JoJo and not Bercow is just criminal.

What did Theresa May’s DH do you deserve a knighthood?

Just seen the piece on channel 4 news, batshit.

Joans3rddaughter · 31/07/2020 19:38

Whilst we're on the subject can anybody tell my why Nick Clegg received a Knighthood.
Hereditary peerage, how can that be a justified in the 21st century?

Medievalist · 01/08/2020 09:54

Given that Jo Jo has resigned from posts because he is so 'principled', I can't understand why he would agree to this. If he had done something to deserve it, then fair enough, style out the fact that the giver is your brother. But as he so clearly hasn't done anything of much significance, you'd think he would be too embarrassed by such cronyism to accept.

OP posts:
SheepandCow · 01/08/2020 17:17

I suspect the 'principle' was just an excuse. Jo Johnson jumped before he was pushed. His constituency was majority Brexit. He was a vocal Remainer. Whether there were other reasons as well, I don't know, but he wasn't popular with his constituents. There'd been calls for his deselection.

I didn't post to discuss Brexit. I simply wanted to point out his resignation was probably not so principled afterall.
