Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias

I have just watched both of these on Netflix, and cheesy as they are loved them both (so annoying they both only have one season ATM, doesn't help with binge watching!) anyway, does anyone who liked these shows have any recommendations for similar shows?

I was looking at Northern Rescue or Chesapeak shores? Would love some opinions. TIA

Yes, Northern Rescue will satisfy your cheesy cravings. I am not sure about Chesapeak, might be a step too far.

Definitely you'll enjoy This is Us. I am assuming you've watched Gilmore Girls, Hart of Dixie, Everwood...??

I am pining for Parenthood to become available again. That was so so good.

A step up that you might enjoy is Little Fires Everywhere.

MbwaKali · 31/07/2020 14:36

Yes!! Offspring is a new Australian series and I love it.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 31/07/2020 14:39

Famous in love (amazon prime)
might be a bit teenagery but fits the genre

Heartland - Netflix - set on a Canadian Ranch

MbwaKali's suggestion of Offspring is a great shout especially the first few seasons

Loved both Chesapeake and Northern Rescue

Chesapeake Shores is ok but if you binge watch it, it starts to get REALLY irritating.

melissasummerfield · 31/07/2020 14:42

Oooh i have just watched sweet magnolias and loved it, will check out the recommendations!

RiseUpWiseUpEyesUp · 31/07/2020 14:48

Oh @BloggersNetwork I’m so hoping we get Parenthood at some point. I love it so much, it’s the best show.

I’ve just finished Northern Rescue after watching Sweet Magnolias (so need season 2!!) and Virgin River. I like it, they all have the same cosy town vibe.

As @Gin said, Heartland is also fab and has loads of seasons. Amy is really young in the first season and it’s so lovely watch the whole family grow together!

RiseUpWiseUpEyesUp · 31/07/2020 14:49

Wow, way too many so’s in my post Blush

Notonthestairs · 31/07/2020 14:56

Chesapeake Shores is proper drivel with totally undeveloped characters and plot. Peppa Pig has more peril. I found it very relaxing Grin (and really wanted to live in that house).

Loved Virgin River. Haven't tried Sweet Magnolias yet - might start that tonight. Will check out the other recommendations.

InglouriousBasterd · 31/07/2020 15:00

Placemarking for gentle viewing!

Gilmore girls is a favourite here - will try sweet magnolias tonight!

MoggyMittens23 · 31/07/2020 15:00

@BloggersNetwork Loved Little Fires Everywhere! I tried This is Us but couldn't get into it, may need to revisit.

I have never seen Gilmore Girls, hart of Dixie or Everwood so that will go on my list!

I will have a look out for Offspring and Parenthood.

@GinWithASplashOfTonic I don't mind a bit teenagery! I love all the Netflix films like To All The Boys I've Loved Before and The Kissing Booth, that kind of thing!

@RiseUpWiseUpEyesUp That's exactly what I love, the small town cosy vibe!

I really loved Virgin River, cannot wait for season 2!

So is Chesapeake really really cheesy? Like too much?

Thank you everyone for the suggestions.

Yes, Heartland is good as PPs said. I couldn't get on with Chesapeake, need to give it another go as it's usually my type of thing.

Not series but along the same lines on Netflix - Falling Inn Love - the title tells you everything you need to know Grin

And there's one with Kristin Davies and Rob Lowe based in an elephant sanctuary - similar vibe.

Looking forward to series 2 of Virgin River!! I love it but why do they never show the actual town?? Argh!

MoggyMittens23 · 31/07/2020 15:06

@PrivateSpidey I liked that film too - it was so bad it was good!

Ah I have been meaning to watch that one, I know the one you mean.

Hadn't thought about that but true, all we really see is the inside of the Bar and Doc's surgery really!

Offspring is great. It’s not that new but is funny and heartwarming without being schmaltzy. It’s about an Australian obstetrician, successful in her career (with a side order of Imposter Syndrome), looking for a relationship, dealing with her nutty family (she’s the normal, if a bit neurotic one), lots of inner monologue. I might have to rewatch it actually.

PrivateSpidey · 31/07/2020 16:59

So true! Grin I noticed it in about episode 3 and it just bugged me from then on! I love the small town vibe as you say, but they never actually show the small town!

I haven't seen Offspring, that sounds good.

BloggersNetwork · 31/07/2020 19:02

I am enjoying Offspring just fine but it doesn't provide the cosiness that us cheese chasers are yearning for. It's Australian you see. For me, it needs to be set in a small American town; I can accept Canadian if there's snow involved.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 31/07/2020 21:35

How can you watch Hart of Dixie? I watched some episode when it first came out but was at uni and sort of passed me by.

Slightly more adult so not for a young audience but Client List is worth a watch. About a masseuse who does "extras"

Flibbertyjibbit · 01/08/2020 02:49

I've found my people, love both virgin River and sweet magnolias. I really enjoyed Chesapeake Shores but I know it's extra cheesey so not everyone likes it

Where can I watch offspring?

LeahDownTheLane · 01/08/2020 03:10

Loved Virgin River and currently on Chesapeake Shores. Need to keep my hallmark fix going until it’s time for all the autumn and festive films.

lakesidesummer · 01/08/2020 03:24

How can you watch Hart of Dixie?
It is currently on USA Netflix.
I watch it and Sweet Magnolias when ironing, the family scoff but they are great froth nonsense to press by.

shartsi · 01/08/2020 03:28

Dolly Parton has a series on Netflix called Heartstrings based on the stories in her songs e g. Jolene. I like it a lot, cheesy.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 01/08/2020 11:43

Off to work out how to get USA Netflix

When Calls the Heart was ok. But I found it a bit too slow and obvious

Roped & the healers were decent movies

MoggyMittens23 · 01/08/2020 14:56

@LeahDownTheLane yes!! Those are the best films! (but very bad at the same time haha!)

I am 3 episodes in Northern Rescue and enjoying it so far!

This is us is the best tele ever.

InTheCludgie · 01/08/2020 16:38

Love small town America cheesiness in my tv viewing! Kids back to school a week on Wednesday so will be binge watching some on the recommendations on this thread on my days off work.

MrsWhites · 01/08/2020 16:44

I don’t think it’s on Netflix but don’t know if it’s on any other streaming services but I loved Brothers and Sisters too with Rob Lowe and Calista Flockhart.
