Please tell me what you do!
The jobs of mine and my close family and friends are almost all jobs that cannot be readily be done from home.
These range from Doctors/ Retail workers/ journalist/ chef/ teaching assistant/ dog trainer/ lab technician etc etc, a range of fairly normal jobs.
A few are furloughed but most are back or have been working throughout covid.
I am intrigued as to what all the office worker type jobs are that can be done safely and effectively from home, and how one goes about getting such a job. Many of them have said they are dreaming of a more flexible work/ life balance. I can only really think about IT support jobs or freelance creative jobs like writers or artists that require natural talent. Any ideas?

I can WFH whenever I choose but it's not home based IYSWIM. I'm a corporate lawyer.

I think alot of these office jobs were never originally classed as being able to be wfh and covid proved they could be.
I'm a 2nd line manager, never thought it could work but it does. It works currenlty as we're all established in our roles. However there are roles in our org that are limping along wfh but ideally will return to the office in 21.

Freelance translator. I’ve been working from home for years.

Most of my organisation is now wfh having previously been mainly office based. It's Social Housing.

Lawyer, client meetings and court hearings all managed virtually.

My job before this one I really enjoyed...it was a research assistant role (report writing)...they tend to be fixed term contracts though eg. length of the project or "need report by X date" though.

I work in a creative agency - think Mad Men with computers.

One day a week was always WFH for my department, which was normally spent presentation writing. Normally there was a lot of cross-departmental teamwork and human contact required the rest of the week. We’re all struggling in lockdown, both with the logistics and with the change in tempo. Used to thrive on deadlines and it was a very extrovert loud piss-taking environment. I realise that’s most people’s idea of a nightmare but we loved it and we’re missing it. Think it’s one of the reasons I’m posting on MN after years of lurking, as I’m desperate to try and reach other humans. We’re returning to the office on 1st September and I can’t bloody wait.

Conveyancing solicitor.

TBH most office jobs can be done from home these days. It's mainly a question of the bosses being willing.

I work for an advertising agency and it’s my job to win us new clients.

I don’t love it at all but it pays very well and lockdown has proved it can be done from home. I’m really not loving doing pitches over video call however and am keen to get back to face to face meetings

I work in claims and disputes in the construction industry. Everything can be done online. I do occasionally need to visit sites or client offices but vast majority of my work can be done from home.

"Enjoy" is a bit much - it's not a dream job or a passion project - but I'm happy in my job because of the culture, flexibility, pay and progression. I work in insurance; fell into it through a temp customer service role and worked my way up and sideways. I'm not in a senior role, but earning enough to be comfortable for my lifestyle.

I work with databases and fundraising for a charity. I used to go into the office but turns out I can do most of it from home.

I think if I could go in one day a week in the future then it would be fab.

Office manager of a small law firm. I've had to step away from the in office duties but have picked up more PA duties which has been great.

I’m a designer for web sites and applications. The lockdown hasn’t affected my client work at all as I’ve always been remote.

Many in the third sector and consultants wfh as norm, with nominal on site meetings.

I work pt and wfh as the norm. In a normal pre covid month I would have had maybe 6 or 8 hours not at home.

Jobs do exist.

Accountant. I miss the office and occasionally not being able to grab the CFO for a two minute question because he back-to-back in overrunning calls is frustrating (in the office I would get his EA to door hang!). But I can do my job effectively. Which is good as we’re currently looking at 2021 for a return (so the rumour mill tells me).

HR consultant/director. Worked from home for years. Considering I work across so many time zones it works far better.

I'm a Data Analyst. I love it, but appreciate it might not be everyone's cup of tea! Prior to Coronavirus I worked in an office, but WFH hasn't actually had any impact on my ability to work and I imagine I'll be WFH for the rest of the year at least.

Civil service, not a front line role (think IT based). I can completely do every aspect of my job from home. I am more productive (we are extremely busy due to Covid).
At the start of lockdown there was a lot of talk about it being a permanent thing...now discourse seems to be veering towards presenteeism.
I work in an extremely congested environment where there wasnt enough room for everyone in the first place! I cant imagine going back there.

Editor for a scientific journal. I've worked from home for many years and love it. Apart from the today, when the wooden garden office is like a pizza oven! I have relocated to the kitchen table.

I do digital marketing.

The team I manage are based in another country, as is my manager, and I work with internal teams globally. It's a client side role in a global company. I've always worked 1-2 days at home anyway, and even when I'm in the office at least 60% of my work is with teams in other locations.

I don't think about work ever outside of when I'm actually working. It's in a well paid vertical as well. It's not very challenging but with two young DDs it's a pretty sweet role

I'm a Business Manager for a small Management Consultancy Firm. Because it's a small company, my work it's very varied, and that keeps things interesting.

Software development. I used to WFH about once a week but there was a lot of flexibility so if I had reasons it would make life easier it could be up to about three days.

As a PP above, my whole job can be done from home and I'm not expecting to be in until September and probably until 2021.

Debt advisor- used to be in the office all the time, now wfh (for the foreseeable).

I am employed and work full time from home. Am an accountancy support tutor - along with other tutors we answer queries from students who are studying for accountancy exams.
