If you saw a payslip left open at someone's house, would you take a look?

Assuming you don't already know how much they earn.

No I haven't but I left mine out and wondered if some visitors to my home might have sneaked a peek.

I’ve done this. When the kids were little and I didn’t have twopence to bless myself with, one of my employers (I was a cleaner) left their open payslip on prominent view. I looked with a jaundiced eye, as she paid me a tenner a week 🙄

lakeswimmer · 29/07/2020 20:38

Yes I would but, as others have said, only if I didn't have to touch it and it was out on a table!

PandaGreen · 29/07/2020 20:52

I'd be tempted, I don't even know why, it has that peek behind the scenes feeling/reminiscent of when I was a kid and finding out what cheques were and how they worked, or looking at the child benefit book that DM spent on weekly fags...but it's kinda invasive so no I wouldn't look.

I found a fiver in a christmas card from my neighbours gran wrongly posted to me....ended up as beer money. I was a student. Going to a bad place Blush

myfavouritefudgecake · 29/07/2020 20:53

To be honest I probably would have a peek if I didn't have to touch it. And to be honest anyone is welcome to look at mine because I earn a very average salary in a sector that pays not that well and that's obvious to everyone who knows me.

IloveBeefJerky · 29/07/2020 20:56

I would 200%

MikeDryden · 29/07/2020 20:56

No way, that would be a huge invasion of privacy.

DownThePlath · 29/07/2020 20:57

Absolutely

myfavouritefudgecake · 29/07/2020 20:58

On this note, are people really very bothered about others knowing what you're paid? It doesn't really tell you anything about their real financial situation.

I think I know what most of my friends are paid. We're all really open and always have been. Perhaps that is unusual?

PreviouslyZeus · 29/07/2020 21:02

I've always been told not to discuss salary. I do with friends I trust but I don't with people I don't know well or who I feel may make judgements about my financial affairs, if that makes sense.

Yes, of course I would look, assuming it was left out open and in view. If it was that private and confidential, it shouldn't be out on open view! Nor would I care if someone looked at mine, feel free....

shinynewapple2020 · 29/07/2020 21:48

If it was just sitting there then , yes, I'd look .

MsEllany · 29/07/2020 22:15

@quodvox

No. It's private. Only a lowlife would do that.
Grin the level of bonkers on this site is out of control. First it was ‘carb overload’ from a pineapple and now only a lowlife would look at an open payslip. Get. A. Grip. Some of you are so tightly wound it is unreal.

Would I look? Probably.

Coyoacan · 29/07/2020 22:16

I just read everything I see all the time. If I stopped and thought I wouldn't, of course, because it is none of my business

Hairthrowaway · 29/07/2020 22:17

I genuinely wouldn’t. I’m in my early 20s though and so are my friends, so I know roughly what they earn (not muchGrin as early career) and we openly discuss it

CookieMonster22 · 29/07/2020 22:27

If it was at someones house I really would not be interested in what they earned.

If it was left out at work I might be more interested solely to see if I was getting a fair salary in comparison.

I am really surprised at the number of people that would take a look.

thriftyhen · 29/07/2020 22:28

Yes, if it were completely open, but not if it were folded up or in an envelope.

NetballHoop · 29/07/2020 22:29

I'm amazed that people still have printed payslips. Mine have been emailed to me for years now.

I certainly wouldn't be looking at a payslip in someone else's email.

BobFleming · 29/07/2020 22:32

Do people still get payslips in 2020? I haven't had one for years.

I wouldn't look.

moklty · 29/07/2020 22:36

Of course they do. Why would they not? Just because you don't?

UnagiSalmonSkinRoll · 29/07/2020 22:39

Don't do it! My sil's boyfriend looked at her mum's payslip which was on the side by the front door as they were going. As the front door was open he had a peek. It was caught on their Amazon door bell 😂

BoredHoolet · 29/07/2020 22:43

No way. I actually feel quite dirty at the thought.

I am not some morality queen, I would no more look than look down someone’s shirt or watch them at a urinal. It’s just too personal. Ick.

Love51 · 29/07/2020 22:48

If it was just lying there on a surface, looking at me? I probably would have done previously but now I know Mumsnet would think badly of me, so I might not. I'll start a thread though.
I also have a nosy at cards on display. I might even touch those to see inside. Wouldn't open an envelope though, putting it back in the envelope is the same as password protecting something!

hotstepper4 · 29/07/2020 23:05

Yep, sorry, I'm a nosy cow

katy1213 · 29/07/2020 23:20

Yes and I don't believe anyone who says they wouldn't. Not as bad as friend who says they look in bathroom cabinets! Your athelete'sfoot is safe from me!

katy1213 · 29/07/2020 23:21

Or even your athlete's foot.
