If you saw a payslip left open at someone's house, would you take a look?

Assuming you don't already know how much they earn.

No I haven't but I left mine out and wondered if some visitors to my home might have sneaked a peek.

Yes of course I would. I don’t believe anyone would see it and think “AVERT THINE EYES” rather than seeing it before you really process what it is.

Seeing it before you process what it is, is different from deliberately reading it.

OverTheRainbow88 · 29/07/2020 19:00

Ooh!! I’d like to say no I wouldn’t look but I’m not sure!!! I guess it depends who it is! One friend always claims she has no money and is super stingy- like has never offered to buy me a drink even though I always buy her one, say I give her 20 lifts and she gives me 1 would mention petrol money etc, and I have a feeling she is quite Well paid so at hers I think I would need to look!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 29/07/2020 19:01

Good grief, no!! That's a massive invasion of privacy.

MinesAPintOfTea · 29/07/2020 19:02

I would have read it. But that's because I scan words in front of my eyes very fast: if your payslip is open and I walk past it I've read it before I've thought about it.

ButterflyRuns · 29/07/2020 19:02

No, why would I want to do that?

BobbieDraper · 29/07/2020 19:04

If it was unfolded infront of my face when I sat down I think I would digest the words before I realised what I was doing. If I could tell what it was from further away, I wouldn't go reading it.

moklty · 29/07/2020 19:05

@quodvox

No. It's private. Only a lowlife would do that.

I must be a lowlife then. Cheers.

Imagine being so nasty to judge someone a lowlife based on one tiny thing Hmm

onemouseplace · 29/07/2020 19:06

I've been in this exact situation and I saw it. My friend had had her loft converted and told me to go upstairs and look round, only her DH's payslip was sat on his desk.

It was a while ago now, so I think I saw it before I could process what it was, but I'm not entirely sure I didn't end up having a proper gander once I'd seen the headline figure.

gingerbeerandlemonade · 29/07/2020 19:08

Yeah. Probably would. I would feel guilty about it but if it was lying there open then I would have a glance.

Littlemeadow123 · 29/07/2020 19:10

It genuinely wouldn't interest me.

BallBallHeelHeel · 29/07/2020 19:14

I wouldn't seek it out, unfold it, turn it over, open an envelope or move things to read it. But if it was open and visible to me where I 'naturally' went, then yes. Of Course I would. I'm nosey and I'm human. I'd assume anyone else in that position would do the same and I'd be suspicious of those who protest otherwise 😆

GoshHashana · 29/07/2020 19:15

Absolutely not! What a liberty.

LoseLooseLucy · 29/07/2020 19:16

lowlife Grin

I’d probably cast my nosey eye over it if it was just there, staring at me.

TheFaerieQueene · 29/07/2020 19:20

No. I am not interested and without getting my bag and finding my glasses, I wouldn’t be able to read the thing anyway!

cheezy · 29/07/2020 19:21

Yes I would

Leflic · 29/07/2020 19:22

I did when I was much younger in an office.

I also worked in the homes in considerably well off families and you just learn to respect people’s privacy really. I wouldn't think to look at anyone’s stuff these days.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 29/07/2020 19:24

literally wide open staring at me to be looked at, probably.
Involving any definitive action on my part such as taking it out of an envelope, no

BasinHaircut · 29/07/2020 19:25

Same as @OverTheRainbow88 unthread it would depend who it was. For 99% of the people I know, I would rather not know what they earn............BUT for some individuals such as my friends husband who is flash as fuck and likes people to think he is mr moneybags, but makes my friend ask him for money for a bloody haircut, I would 100% look because I want to know if he is mr moneybags and a mean fucker, or whether he is spending money they don’t have which probably makes him more of an arsehole. I’d like to know which way to judge that prick so given the chance yes I’d look Grin

AudTheDeepMinded · 29/07/2020 19:26

No, but only because I'm paranoid and would think there was some NannyCam there to catch me doing it!
Why did you leave it out anyway, it's a bit mean, like trying to test people.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 29/07/2020 19:26

In my previous job, my colleague and I accidentally had access to everyone's salary (it was supposed to be access to just one department, not our own, but something had gone wrong and we had access to everyone's including boss, boss's boss etc) Colleague and I kind of egged each other on to see who was on what.

Let's just say curiosity killed the cat as I saw a lot of corruption, people being paid double what other people were for same level job, boss being paid for more hours than she supposedly worked etc. It really put me off my employer. Sometimes not knowing is better.

Oblomov20 · 29/07/2020 19:26

Of course. Only if it was totally laying there.

youwereagoodcakeclyde · 29/07/2020 19:28

Yes I'd look

suggestionsplease1 · 29/07/2020 19:28

I think by the time I'd clocked what it was I would have already scanned it and know the info whether I wanted to or not.

But I certainly wouldn't open an envelope or otherwise touch something, and if my conscious brain had kicked in before scanning the page as a whole I think I would pull away from reading on.

peterpan765 · 29/07/2020 19:30

Yes def - I cant help it I'm nosey !

TheCatsWhisker · 29/07/2020 19:30

No, someone I work with accidentally sent their payslip to our printer when they were working elsewhere and rang me in a panic to retrieve it. I didn't read it because

a) I didn't want to
b) he trusted me not to

I would hate to be the kind of person who abused that trust
