Adult collecting Sylvanian Families...

missbunnyrabbit · 29/07/2020 13:55

Can anyone make me feel better about this, maybe by sharing something they collect that is far too young for them...

I collected Sylvanian Families as a child, loved them so much. Got back into buying vintage ones on Ebay about ten years ago. Basically buying all the ones that I never got as a child. It makes me feel so nostalgic and snuggly. But I also feel guilty at how much money I have spent on them. Definitely over £1000 in my lifetime.

It's also not something I shout about due to the 'childish' nature of Sylvanians. Bit embarrassing!

Does anyone else collect anything a bit weird or too young for them?

Me and DD have just started our collection with the caravan and a car. I never had any as a child. I hope she gets into them as there is loads more I want!

bookmum08 · 29/07/2020 18:31

By the way tkmaxx is often good for Sylvanian bargains.

PersonalClown · 29/07/2020 18:38

Just as a complete aside....
@ForeverRedSkinhead
How many bottle do you own? Mainstream or indie? Creme, Holo, flakey etc?

I'm on 210 so far. A fairly even mix but I pretty much only buy indie now.
I have 47 variants of purple. I have a problem. I also have 3 bottle on order.

@PersonalClown I have just under 100 , I just had a clear out of some rimmels and sally Hansen polishes that were under-performing.

I've got a mix too , a lot of my creme polishes are Maybelline , Essie or Orly. I've got some superchic holos and some fun lacquer holo top coats. My favourite brand is A England right now. Beautiful polishes, with a lovely wide brush.

I see that everyone is going crazy for holo taco right now but the shipping is too much for me!

PersonalClown · 29/07/2020 18:54

Yeah I saw the prices on shipping and thought Hell No.

I have some fabulous linear holos from Wikkid Polish. Sarah makes some amazing colours.

I'm too old to have had Sylvanian Families as a child but I love all the details in them. Playmobil was called Playpeople when I was young but again the details in the little playsets are beautiful. I found a box of Playmobil figures in a charity shop for a few pounds when my children were very small and I think I loved it more than the children did. I bought quite a few spare parts to fix the broken bits. There was a pony and trap which I thought was lovely. I finally managed to give the whole box away a few weeks ago, my DCs never really played with it and I decided a child who really loved Playmobil could have it.
I do have all my vintage dollshouse furniture still in the loft (I saved my pocket money to buy beautiful furniture in the late 1970s and early 80s) but I really regret saying to my parents that they could get rid of my actual dolls house. It has been in their loft for years. I found one being given away for free which was very similar and now it's in my own loft waiting for that mythical time when I will have a spare week or two to renovate it and put all my furniture in it.

Still have my bakery! 😍

Winecheesesleep · 29/07/2020 20:18

I think this is charming! £1000 on a hobby over a lifetime really isn't that much if you can afford it.

Twothousandzerozero · 29/07/2020 20:41

I loved Sylvanians as a child. My DD has just gotten into them so we’ve had all my old ones out (plus house and doctor’s surgery Grin) - have to say, it’s giving me life in these dark 2020 times! And some of the newer ones are absolutely gorgeous too; she’s just got a new family as a present and I don’t know who was more buzzing, me or her!

Lovely thread, OP. I say keep on enjoying them! and also buy the monkey family because they are beyond adorable

Witchend · 29/07/2020 21:38

Children's books, by various authors.
Dh reckons we have too many books.
I say too few bookshelves.

JaffaJaffJaffpussycatpuss · 29/07/2020 21:50

I'd love a 90s Little Tikes dolls house.
I'd love a Baby Born doll of my era too.

Sailingblue · 29/07/2020 22:00

I love sylvanians and it was the one toy I made my parents keep. I brought my 3 year old some and she was non bothered which upset me but a year later she had now got into them and I love it. We make some lovely scenes and it brings back nice memories, Annoyingly my 16m old seems to adore them and I’m constantly having to make sure she doesn’t eat the bloody pieces or crush them. Toddler friendly they are not!

SecretNutellaFix · 29/07/2020 22:15

I have a wardrobe filled with children's books from mostly 1910- 1980, predominantly the girls fiction genre including most of the chalet school series (most of that is in paperback versions though) because I don't have enough bookcases, nor enough room for any more.
I also have a decent size collection of Lego- I have quite a few of the Harry Potter sets, and I've recently discovered Nanoblocks. Which is like miniature Lego.
I've put a request in to my husband that I'd be most upset if the new Hedwig Lego set does not appear on my birthday at the end of next week.

terracottapot · 30/07/2020 16:28

I collect vintage enamel badges from clubs and societies. I've got a couple of lovely old WI ones, some oddments and a few from Brownies & Guides so far, and every time I go to a car boot sale I'll have a quick look to see if there's one I like. There's a stall there every time that sells them - mostly military or railway though.

Meruem · 30/07/2020 16:48

My inner child is greater than my adult side! I have lego, I like the creator expert sets. I’ve collected vast amounts of hello kitty stuff over the years. I also like re-ment sets, which are really cute miniatures. I had a very deprived childhood and had to be the “adult” from the age of 4 when my DSis was born and I more or less raised her. So if I want to enjoy a “childhood” now, then I will. I suspect my friends think my collections are childish but I couldn’t care less.

Fanciedachange1 · 30/07/2020 17:08

Would love to see a pic OP!

I loved sylvanians and kept them all from my childhood. When i moved into my first home i got into ebay and bought some second hand ones to add to my collection. I keep them all in a large plastic box and every now and then i get them out to look at!

I have always liked the texture of them. My dog has fur around his nose that i love to touch because it feels like a sylvanian! He doesn’t mind me doing this i must add.

I have to keep a close eye on my dog though as he loves the mother hedgehog and often tries to pick it up and run off with it!

madcatladyforever · 30/07/2020 17:09

I make and collect bespoke dollshouses.
I pretend it's an adult "collectors" hobby but really I just love dollshouses
Grin

tsmainsqueeze · 01/08/2020 19:23

My 11 year old is not really playing with toys now , can't even remember when i last bought her a toy, we are slowly sorting out outgrown toys / games etc , BUT !!! i will never part with her large collection of sylvanian families, they are gorgeous , and i admit adding things to her collection that i really wanted .
I look forward to becoming a nan one day and the sheer joy of opening box after box of sylvanians and seeing the delight on the faces of my future grandchildren.

teenmumandsowhat · 18/08/2020 11:27

I’ve been collecting sylvanian families ever since i was a child. I’ve probably spent between 2-3 grand in total so far.
There is a whole community of adult collectors. If you search on Facebook you will find dozens of collectors groups etc.

My collection is split into two halves, the majority that i play with and set scenes and make bits for etc, and the rarer collectors bits which stay in their boxes. If i really like a rarer set I will often buy double if i can, so i can unbox one!

GoshHashana · 18/08/2020 11:33

I collect McDonalds happy meal toys from the 80s and 90s! Blush

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 18/08/2020 13:21

@ItsAllGoingtobefine that link has just wasted 20 mins of my day, bloody funny thank you 😂

Toddlerteaplease · 18/08/2020 17:42

I collected Cabbage patch kids. I still have a lot of them. I'm 38. And I really want the play mobile nativity set.

chubbyhotchoc · 18/08/2020 18:09

My dd has sylvanians and tbh they are very very cute so I can quite see why they might be collectible. I don't think it's weird at all

Cam2020 · 18/08/2020 18:18

Nothing wrong with that! It's no different from collecting stamps, shot glasses, old coins or anything else that takes someone's interest.

I sometimes look up old toys I had and loved on ebay, but never bought anything. I've been so tempted though, I totally get what you mean about the snuggly feeling - nostalgia is lovely.

changenamez · 18/08/2020 19:17

Love Sylvanians. I bought myself a rocking horse last year
