Adult collecting Sylvanian Families...

Can anyone make me feel better about this, maybe by sharing something they collect that is far too young for them...

I collected Sylvanian Families as a child, loved them so much. Got back into buying vintage ones on Ebay about ten years ago. Basically buying all the ones that I never got as a child. It makes me feel so nostalgic and snuggly. But I also feel guilty at how much money I have spent on them. Definitely over £1000 in my lifetime.

It's also not something I shout about due to the 'childish' nature of Sylvanians. Bit embarrassing!

Does anyone else collect anything a bit weird or too young for them?

I collect Pez, but I have done from being a child. I still by a new one now when I see them, I have over 100 Blush

My friend collects vintage tea pots and tea cups. That might sound grown up, but I think old teddies/pets get invited to tea parities!

Have you seen Marie Kondo (Kon-Marie) method? For clothes she says if it brings you joy, keep it. I think the same applies to collectibles/toys/books/crockery - if you love it and your hobby doesn’t ruin you financially, then enjoy!

Vintage Polly Pockets are amazing! The ones from the company Bluebird in the 80s-90s, not the awful tacky ones currently on sale. I recently found some of mine and fell down a rabbit hole of looking at vintage Polly Pockets on Instagram and Etsy. I would collect them if I could but they are incredibly pricey!

I also love Sylvanian Family and use DD as an excuse to buy any sets that catch my eye 😂! She's only 1.5 so those are stashed in the cupboard for a few more years.

I also collect Lego, Duplo and playmobil. My DD found my collection of Sylvanian animals and added it to her Sylvanian Tree house now I#ve lost track of whose animals are whose.

I collect lala loopsy dolls and it's not even a nostalgic thing because they weren't around when I was young but I just love them!

chunkyrun · 29/07/2020 15:39

I collect anything moomin related 😆 my mum wouldn't spend that kind of money as a child. So as an adult I love to treat myself. I'm 31 and play Pokemon go every day. I love people that have interests and quirks.

My friend collects sylvanian family and does the most amazing crafts along side them. She's super talented.

My husband loves transformers he’s buys the latest ones and spends hundreds on them, he lets the kids play with them so I’m not too bothered. It’s just a hobby, if you like collecting a toy collect away, you’re not hurting anybody.

krustykittens · 29/07/2020 15:49

GalaxyCake I have a vintage Polly Pocket Cinderalla Castle and Stepmother's Cottage in my office with all the figures and I have Hogwarts! They are fab!

VenusClapTrap · 29/07/2020 15:51

Aw, Sylvanian Families came out when I was about 12, and I was devastated that I was too old for them. I bought myself a little grey rabbit and a little brown rabbit and they sat by my bedside. I would have loved to buy more, but all my friends were reading Smash Hits and putting up Wham posters. I gave my rabbits to dd when she came along, and bought her some other families, but she’s never been very interested. Sad

I also loved the Flower Fairies, and I can remember secretly buying outfits for them when I was really far too old for dolls. I’ve still got my Flower Fairies and their Petal Pool stashed away somewhere. Dd didn’t want them. One day I’ll get around to selling it all.

KilljoysDutch · 29/07/2020 15:53

I have monster high dolls all over my bedroom, some of them have been given new faces, hair and clothes, some of them are in a box awaiting their glow up and some are exactly the way they came because I love them. Saving up to buy the Gaga MH doll.

Why not? As long as it isn't causing financial problems (or you can't move in your home for them). As a hobby it's pretty harmless

DH and I are both adult Lego fans. We've just run out of display space again. I know a few men with train set ROOMS.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 29/07/2020 15:57

Lego here too. Dread to think of total cost. Still have loads of my old toys too that some of you would love.

binkyblinky · 29/07/2020 15:58

I never got sylvanian families when I was younger. I longed for them!

HagridsBackTeeth · 29/07/2020 15:59

I have a vast collection of "children" books from the 1920s-1960s. They bring me pleasure, and I don't give a fuck what anyone else thinks.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/07/2020 16:03

This isn't even half of our collection (not including the children's bits either!)

Like a lot of people, I went through a phase of giving away all my 'childish' things because I wanted to be a grown up. One of the toys I bitterly regret getting rid of was my vast collection of Britain's farms figures and models. I had a farmhouse and stone walls that clicked together and outbuilding and tractors and I spent HOURS setting it up and playing with it as a child. My daughters have a massive collection of Schleiss (?) horses bought over the years and they will never be sold on or given away. My youngest is 16 and still plays with her Monster Highs and loves her Monster high school. It's funny how women are made to feel guilty about such simple pleasures. Plenty of men collect toys and memorabilia, they don't seem to be made to feel bad about it the way women are. It is because we are expected to grow and care for everyone and not have wants or needs of our own?!

Kathulu · 29/07/2020 16:05

I collect anything Nightmare Before Christmas from daft pounds shop things to the ridiculously priced cuckoo clocks. They're proudly on display and make up a small part of the whole family's different collections which include things related to films, books, games and comics. Our home looks like an eccentrics jumble sale 😂

Nix2020 · 29/07/2020 16:10

Can I come over to play? I love them, I follow pages on Instagram, they make me feel warm inside. Your hobby is so interesting.

tmh88 · 29/07/2020 16:10

I’m currently in the process of collection brio Thomas trains op... I haven’t confessed that to anyone! You’re not alone Grin

Whiskeylover45 · 29/07/2020 16:35

Lego in this house. Found my (very large) box of lego in my parents attic a few weeks ago.

Also love sylvanian families. Brought all of mine and DSiS old ones over "for the kids." Still enjoy playing with them now as much as I did asa child.

If we could afford it I'd also do playmobile as I never had any growing up lol. When I win the lottery I'll be buying them all (princess castle that was always on display in fenwicks/john lewis)

DopamineHits · 29/07/2020 16:46

I'm jealous! I would love to collect all the G1 My Little Pony's, but can't spare the money or the room. If you can afford it, and you evidently enjoy it, have fun!

bookmum08 · 29/07/2020 17:23

I am an AFOL (adult fan of Lego). I have done displays at shows. Not this year sadly. Some shows are just for Lego but some are general model shows so you do get the occasional Sylvanian Families or Playmobil display.
If I had the space and money I would love to paint up dolls houses for Sylvanian Families or Playmobil to live in and I would definitely love to have a Hornby Train set.

BloggersNetwork · 29/07/2020 17:26

I only had children so I could play with 'their' toys. You're totally normal OP.

Sparklyring · 29/07/2020 18:12

Lego here too! We collect the modular buildings but are missing some of the older ones so keeping an eye on Ebay. We both enjoy it, find it relaxing and they're nice little projects to do together.
