Can anyone identify this random tool?

This is very random! I found this half buried at the back of my garden, it must have been there for quite some time. I've tried googling but I cannot find out what it is, and I am totally clueless about tools and the like.

Does anyone know what it is before I chuck it??!

It's a micrometer. My brother is an engineer and uses one.

Looks like a micrometer for measuring - takes me back to school engineering and science - wonder how it ended up in the garden!
