Council tenancy

As of today I’m a single mum. We’ve got a council house, he will be going elsewhere. It’s a joint tenancy, I’d like to take him off, but will this effect my tenancy? And if so, how so? I’ve looked on the council website and it just says I need to contact my local housing officer.
Has anyone gone through this?

I work in a housing office, definitely ask to speak with your housing officer. Our tenants have to both agree before a name can be removed and it would restart a new sole tenancy. We would also work out whether it was affordable for a sole tenant before signing the new tenancy agreement. Not all councils will have the same procedures though

Will saying I’ll be applying for UC enough? He doesn’t mind either way if he goes off, I’d prefer him to be off but don’t want to loose our home over it.
