Huge massive box for 1 pair knitting needles!😖

That is absolutely ridiculous! Worthy of a comment/complaint to Amazon.

McDougal · 26/07/2020 18:59

We had similar today. A box bigger than me for a pair of hockey sticks! I've complained to amazon before and just get a standard response but nothing ever changes. If anything, the box sizes are getting more ridiculous by the day.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 26/07/2020 19:06

I think they’re getting worse!

Have you got a cat? Make it into a fort cats love boxes 🤣 😺

Amazon is a mega-retailer focussed on low cost. They'll do whatever they think keeps their costs down. So they have a small number of standard boxes, and obviously a box just for long narrow items isn't among them.

If you don't like it, vote with your wallet. I only buy from Amazon as a last resort.

OrigamiOwl · 26/07/2020 20:35

I did read an explanation online a while ago. The people who do the packings address on such a tight time schedule they have to pick the right box for the item first time, going back to get a different size would put them behind... So they always overestimate the size of the package required.

KitKatastrophe · 26/07/2020 20:37

We had a similar sized box with a baseball cap in it. My husband couldnt actually find it to start with under all the paper! Luckily we were able to reuse the box to send something else but it is absolutely ridiculous.

gamerchick · 26/07/2020 20:38

The boxes are chosen to make efficient use of the space in the lorry. So yes it'll be a bit strange on occasion.

AlternativePerspective · 26/07/2020 20:40

Their packaging is absolutely ridiculous. Whenever we order something we take bets on how big the item inside is likely to be.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 26/07/2020 20:40

They love an oversized box!

What I dislike most is when they send things in the boxes that have ends that are just folded in. How more of their items don't get lost/stolen from the package as they are so easy to open I don't know!

My last package was in a small, semi open cardboard box. Left at the door in 30° sun. It was a bottle of pure acetone 😯🙈

Soubriquet · 26/07/2020 20:48

My last box was battered and ripped...

And there as two books in there too! Just glad I had no missing items or damaged items as there was 4 items in there

Topseyt · 26/07/2020 20:55

Amazon are ridiculous for this sort of thing.

I once ordered a silicon baking mat (non-stick) and it arrived in such a massive box that it barely fitted on my kitchen table, around which I comfortably seat 5 adults for meals.

My DD ordered cables for her computer a while ago and the box for those was also enormous.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 26/07/2020 21:06

Is that nail varnish?!!!

I got a parcel from amazon and it was empty, took me ages to get my money refunded, I’ve recently had battered boxes with my stuff looking like it’s been kicked around the floor.

EatsShootsAndRuns · 26/07/2020 21:47

I had a box which was 2m long with a 1m ruler inside it. I've kept it as it amused me.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/07/2020 21:47

I had similar for a pair of windscreen wipers. Not Amazon, but Euro Car Parts.

The delivery man said to me something like 'I've brought you a massive box of air' because the box was huge but weighed almost nothing. He was as puzzled as me when I told him what was in the parcel.

I also got curtain poles from Ikea that came in a box that could have housed a small wardrobe, fully assembled.

You'd think they'd have something like a long thin cardboard envelope for this sort of item, but maybe they don't send enough packages like this to make it worthwhile, even though the likes of Amazon will be able to custom specify the packaging that they use.

MissRabbitIsExhausted · 26/07/2020 21:54

The logistics department in my workplace once told us it's to disguise what's in the box better. So obviously I know nobody is going to steal Knitting needles, but they don't put laptops for instance in a box that is small and similar size to a laptop to try to prevent it going missing/being stolen 🤷‍♀️

MissRabbitIsExhausted · 26/07/2020 21:55

I don't work for Amazon btw - just that it might be a similar thought.

ceeveebee · 26/07/2020 22:08

I ordered a tennis skirt the other day, if could have been put in a large envelope- instead it arrived in a cardboard box about 3ft by 6inches with tonnes of paper...totally wasteful!

QueenofLouisiana · 26/07/2020 22:30

Recently, I have had an airer delivered (a caravan window one) which is about 1cm thick. The box was about 15cm deep and half as big again as the airer itself.
John Lewis sent an under bed storage box (to be used for shoes under the caravan- there’s a theme here). The box was so big I couldn’t fit it in my boot to drive it home- I drive a 4x4 big enough to tow the caravan...

Triangularbubble · 26/07/2020 22:48

Recently bought child sized t-shirt - came in manufacturer’s plastic bag. Put inside amazon branded plastic envelope bag thing. Then put inside another identical amazon plastic envelope bag thing with address sticker on. Completely absurd - 3 plastic bags for one item of children’s clothing.
