Anyone know anything about commercial genetic testing?

Anyone know anything about gene or genetics testing? I'd ideally like to find out if there's anything I need to be worried about passing on to my children and also find out if I have a genetic disorder of obesity of some kind as almost no amount of diet and exercise results in weight loss for me (I start gaining weight rapidly every time I try a "diet" like slimfast or weight watchers as they all contain vastly more calories than I usually eat). Nothing wrong with my thyroid before anyone asks.

Has anyone had this done and is one test as good as another? Is one provider as good as another? Do I need to get multiple tests or just one?

Do you have children already?
If so, what difference would getting tested mean to you?

I know lots about genetics testing as my ds has a genetic disorder.

But nothing about it being done privately.

There are companies that will do it. You have to get a blood test and send it off.

*thespottedzebra" No children yet - hence wanting to do this.

isgettingweird - did your son get it on the NHS?

Yes.

He had CHG array.

Then specific test for HSP.

Now he's on splicing and disease genetics study.

I also had generic test to see if I have same gene vault as ds.

I do! But no issues.

Only other 2 people identified with fault are ds and an American man with a similar neuro condition to him.

We don't know relevance of gene fault. Hence the study.
