Favourite Harry Potter funny moments or lines

The series had lots of funny scenes, as well as the dark overall tone. What were your favourite funny scenes in the books, films, or the stage play if you've seen it? Here are some which made me laugh out loud. Some of these scenes feel weirdly topical at the moment.

Order of the Phoenix:

 • Professor McGonagall having her lesson inspected by Umbridge. "Obviously I knew you would be inspecting, or I would have asked you what you are doing in my classroom!" Also the scene where Harry is sent to McGonagall. "For heaven's sake, Potter!" she said, straightening her glasses angrily (she had winced horribly when he had used Voldemort's name). "Do you think this is about truth or lies?"

Half Blood Prince: the chapter "The Other Minister", where the minister of magic meets the Muggle prime minister. I think that's one of the funniest scenes in the whole series. "The trouble is, the other side can do magic too, Prime Minister."

Deathly Hallows: the scenes with Phineas Nigellus, the snide and pompous Slytherin former head of Hogwarts. He also has some great moments in Order of the Phoenix:
"I disagree with Dumbledore on many counts, but you can't deny he's got style."
"You know, this is precisely why I loathed being a teacher! Young people are so convinced they know everything."

None of the above scenes appeared in the films, only the books. However, one scene in the film of Order of the Phoenix which I think was superb was the one where barefoot Luna Lovegood explains to Harry about the invisible Thestrals.

*I thought they edited Peeves out because the original run time of the film was like 7 hours or something bonkers?
*
Couldn't they have released the extended version on DVD like they did with Lord of The Rings

Dumbledore's reply when Harry asks him what he sees when he looks in the Mirror of Erised.
"I see myself holding a pair of thick, woollen socks. Another Christmas has come and gone, and I didn't get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books."

In Deathly Hallows, Ron explaining the ghoul in pyjamas, disguised as himself with spattergroit.
"The ghoul seems happy with it; I mean, it's hard to tell, because all he can do is moan and drool - but he nods a lot when you mention it."

Also in that scene, although not funny, when Hermione tearfully tells Harry how she's rewritten her parents' lives to exclude her. "They're now convinced that their names are Wendell and Monica Wilkins, and their life's ambition is to move to Australia, which they have now done."

^ that breaks my heart both in the books and in the movie when she obliviate's them.

When Harry has been sent to Mcgonnagal by Umbridge
‘Have a biscuit Potter’
‘No thanks’
‘Don’t be ridiculous!’

I love her Grin

wanderings · 28/07/2020 14:23

@Percivalthebabyspider I love that scene too. "Her eyes zoomed from side to side behind their square spectacles as she read what Umbridge had written, and with each line they became narrower." And when she dismisses him with "well, I'm glad you listen to Hermione Granger, at any rate".

In Chamber of Secrets, when the three take their Polyjuice potion in their separate toilet cubicles, it's clever that when Hermione accidentally transforms herself into a cat, she has the foresight to send the boys on their mission anyway, without saying what happened to her. If she had revealed herself straight away, they would have fussed over her instead.
@CircleofWillis which podcast was that?
It was from the Hay festival. Here's a video of the same interview.

Anything involving Professor Mcgonagol and Umbridge is class, but in particular the part where Umbridge is trying to evict Trelawny and Mcgonagol is comforting her.

U “is there something you’d like to say professor”
PM “oh there are a great many things I’d like to say”

And the one in the steps
U “so silly of me, but it sounds like you’re questioning my authority in my classroom” “Minerva”

PM “not at all” “Delores”

Totally agree! But then anything involving maggie smith is awesome Smile i also love it in deathly hallows when she comes to ravenclaw common room and the carrow brother says harry is suspected of being there and she says "but potter is in MY house" with such pride in her voice

"Percy wouldn't recognise a joke if it danced naked in front of him wearing Dobby's tea cosy."

WhoresDerves · 29/07/2020 15:13

I think if they wasn't witches 🧙‍♀️ and mcgonagall & umbridge had a good old fashioned punch up, mcgonagall would win hands down!

I just came across a good one on the internet: perhaps Moaning Myrtle wasn't played by Shirley Henderson, but by Daniel Radcliffe in a wig. Wink

I quite liked some of the Gilderoy Lockheart scenes.

wanderings · 09/08/2020 20:07

@PasstheBucket89 There's that funny scene in the book of Order of the Phoenix where they meet Lockhart in St Mungo's Hospital, who has still not recovered from his memory loss. "I didn't learn joined-up writing for nothing, you know!"

Neville Longbottom: Are you really giving us permission to do this?
Minerva McGonagall: Yes, Longbottom.
Neville Longbottom: Blow it up? Boom?
Minerva McGonagall: BOOM!
Minerva McGonagall: Why don't you confer with Mr. Finnigan? As I recall, he has a particular proclivity for pyrotechnics.
Seamus Finnigan: I can bring it down!
Minerva McGonagall: That's the spirit, now away you go.

wanderings · 09/08/2020 21:34

Dumbledore: “Professor Umbridge must know you are out of your beds. Minerva, go and head her off, tell her any story.”
Professor McGonagall was gone in a swish of tartan.
