I've realised that I'm totally out of touch with music and would really like your recommendations for music I might like - I've just got an Alexa and I'm rediscovering my love of music whilst also realising I know nothing about it any more

Music I like:

The Killers
Pulp
Foo Fighters
Red Hot Chili peppers
Queen
Bowie
Maroon five
Vampire weekend
Amy Winehouse
Linkin park
Arctic Monkeys
Counting Crows
Beyoncé
Katie Perry
Pink

Basically rock, glam rock, funk, anything with decent guitar/drums or fun lyrics

Suggestions please!

There's a real dearth of Geetar rawk these days...

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/07/2020 15:45

Ah yes, I've noticed no jingly jangly guitar bands either.

I have wide and eclectic music tastes and for about a decade have found very little to like. Worse, when I do hear something I like the first thing I think is which band of yesteryear they seem to be ripping!

I'll hang around for the suggestions 😉

I am like you and have done something similar this year by deliberately seeking out new (to me) music on Spotify

I have particularly liked

Courteneers - particularly Falcon album

The Last Shadow Puppets

Taylor Swifts last 2 albums Lover and Folklore

Blossoms

Freya Ridings

Jessie Ware

HAIM

Cigarettes After Sex

I also absolutely love First Aid Kit but I was already a fan of theres. Also if you like P!nk and Katy Perry give Little Mix ago.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 26/07/2020 15:56

theirsHmm

Madcats · 26/07/2020 16:06

Alexa is a bit hopeless with some genres, but I would try asking her..:

"Alexa play me some 1990s(substitute other decades) Rock/Funk/Indie" and see what happens

You can interrupt her to ask "Alexa, what is this?" if you are on a "Dot", not a "Show"

I bet you'd love Supermark open.spotify.com/artist/3qQ93XWMLZMkn3L7jSIGvq?nd=1&nd=1
Supermarkmusic.com

queenofknives · 26/07/2020 16:11

Taylor Swift's new album is amazing. Some other suggestions:

Sizzy Rocket
HAIM
Charlotte Adigery
Grimes
Tove Styrke

Really recommend spotify for finding new music. I've found loads of stuff I love through their 'discover' playlists.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/07/2020 16:13

Oh, if you want a post punk blast of fast talking loud Costello Music by The Fratellis is glorious... later albums slowed a bit.

Maybe Futureheads too

biggirlknickers · 26/07/2020 16:21

Try these:

Adult Mom
Porridge Radio
Katy J Pearson
Do Nothing
Squid
The Orielles
Peaness
Wolf Alice
The Interruptors

All guitary and new or newish. I love discovering new stuff through Spotify!

WaltzingBetty · 26/07/2020 20:23

Ooh! Brilliant thank you all!

I have Amazon music rather than Spotify but can ask Alexa to make suggestions -would never have thought of that - thanks for the tip!

Lots of good suggestions I've never heard of - particularly appreciate the specific album suggestions - that's really helpful thanks.

I'm surprised that TS has been mentioned a couple of times - I wanted her doc on Netflix and surprisingly enjoyed it but didn't really think her music would be my thing.
Def don't like little mix - I'm not a huge pop fan but do like a bit - generally I like 'smart' lyrics which I think Katie Perry often does quite well (along with the catchy tunes) and I like Pink's lyrics and general genre. Not sure little mix are either clever or punky.

I know the Courtneteers and Fratellis slightly but haven't listened to much - will revisit those.

Please keep suggestions coming!

Terralee · 27/07/2020 19:50

I like Sigrid

Will0wtree · 27/07/2020 20:18

All the albums of these bands are good I think, but as an introduction....

My Chemical Romance - the "Welcome to the Black Parade" album (it's got some definite Queen vibes)

Panic at the Disco - "Death of a Bachelor" album.
Fall Out Boy - "From under the Cork Tree" album
Imagine Dragons - "Smoke and Mirrors" album

WaltzingBetty · 27/07/2020 23:23

Ooh! Please do keep coming back!

There are some bands I love but had forgotten and this thread has triggered me to rediscover them - thank you!
Loving these suggestions Grin
