What was this crocheting tool thing?

Talking with DD I mentioned that in my day (the 80s), our idea of fun was making a long thin string of sort of crochted wool from a tool that was a cylinder wooden tube painted to look like a doll with some metal prongs coming out of her head. However, try as I might I can't find an example on google and so I can't show her, just to give her the full effect of how rubbish is what.

What on earth was it? It wasn't proper crocheting with just a hook, and not block crotcheting as that was on a bigger frame thing.

Any ideas gratefully received!

French knitting. We used to have a cotton reel with 4 nails in it.

What a blast from the past, I plastic one shaped like a queen with a crown on her head.

I have two of them. I also have a special hook thing that helps you pick the yarn over the needle. You make long tubes with it and then sew them together to make things like knitted coasters or flowers or whatever. Uses a lot of yarn though. Loom knitting is similar but on a bigger scale.

I had a knitting nancy too!

DD got one a couple of years back, I may dig it out and use it myself! Don't think I ever made anything useful from the cords apart from a coaster, but could use it to make cords for masks or similar now ...
