What did you do with your wedding dress?

I got married in 2015 and it was amazing, my dress was lovely but it took up so much space in the wardrobe so I sold it and bought a dog with the money 😊 I don't regret it but I do wonder if when we have kids if I'll regret not having it to show them? However the dog is awesome!

Mine was a knee length Ronald Joyce dress for my wedding in 1992. It went into the loft and survived various house moves. When I was clearing the house ready for sale (due to impending divorce) I thought I would try it on to see if it still fitted. I got the dress on and zipped up but due to the boning in it I couldn't reach to get the zip back down, so there I am like some modern day Miss Haversham in trainers and a dress that had been chewed by mice. I broke into an absolute sweat trying to get out of and thought I might have to nip to the local pub to get someone to help. Thankfully I eventually got it off it and gave it to the local charity shop. I rather hoped a Goth might have it, dye it black and wear with Doc Martins. I was due to get married in May this year but it's postponed. When it does finally happen I will be wearing a demure tea dress style with a side zip Grin

Mines in a box on top of the wardrobe. 8yo ds sometimes puts it on and prances about declaring he's a princess, but that's about it!

It's an original 1950s floofy prom dress I got off eBay, I doubt anyone else would want it. I should create an occasion to wear it again - maybe a Grease dance-off Grin

Cheerybigbottom · 24/07/2020 10:11

I had it cleaned then it hung in the wardrobe for 5 years until I gave it to a charity to make gowns for angel babies. I had a terrible day and hated the reminder so it's made me feel at peace with it all since it went to a good cause.

TimeWastingButFun · 24/07/2020 10:12

I feel slightly uncomfortable about what I'd do with it when I'm very old and wrinkly. Surely I wouldn't try it on
It was similar to this so not too much 'bulk' to need a huge box.

I too was married in 2015 and I wanted to sell my dress. I got a strawberry daiquiri stain on the lace, it's actually not too bad but I haven't had it cleaned, it was pretty hard to find somewhere nearby and I contacted a few that didn't get bk to me.

It lace strapless sweetheart neckline so wld sell well. Here's a pic I still love it. Then again it's a size 8 and it's been altered to fit me at 5ft1 so might be harder to sell given it can't be altered down much. I doubt any of my daughters will want it when they marry sure they will want whatever is in at that time.

I’ve lost mine. Could be at my mum’s, could be at my mil’s (in which case, she’ll have made dusters out of it, or used it to mop something up!).

I loved that dress. As far away from bridal as you can imagine but it was the first one I saw, the only one I tried on and it made me feel all pretty and swooshy.

Newbiehere123 · 24/07/2020 10:37

I put a picture of it on Instagram and asked friends and family if they knew anyone that needed a wedding dress. A friend replied saying she knew a girl getting married but had financial troubles. So I sent the dress to her and it fit! I told her she could do whatever she likes with it and she only had the tail taken off. She married last summer and they sent me pictures of it, she looked lovely in it.

Mine came from Oxfam and went back there! I have photos.

TheCanyon · 24/07/2020 10:55

In a dress bag on top of the wardrobe. It's a simple fishtail gown so maybe one of my dds can use it

JonHammIsMyJamm · 24/07/2020 10:56

Lovely frock, OP. Mine got puked on (by a baby guest) and the specialist cleaners couldn’t get it out. It had also been torn at the bottom where another guest stood on it 🤦🏼‍♀️. It spent 10years ish scrunched up in a cupboard and then got chucked in a skip. I kept the groom though Wink

This thread should probably be required reading for brides to be!

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 24/07/2020 11:16

Mine was a non bridal dress, and it's still hanging in my wardrobe

MissSmiley · 24/07/2020 11:20

My STBEX put the box that it was in in the garage when we last moved, it got damp and ruined and I chucked it in the skip when the builders started work, I was sad about it being ruined it was beautiful despite being 20 years old, it felt quite liberating chucking it though

MissSmiley · 24/07/2020 11:20

STBXH obvs

MintyCedric · 24/07/2020 11:22

Mine lived in the loft while I was married.

When I got divorced I donated it to the textiles department at the school where I work.

Hardbackwriter · 24/07/2020 11:28

I also got married in 2015 and my dress is somewhere in my parents' house. I wanted to donate it but it would have needed cleaning beforehand (I got beer down it, sat on grass in it, let a small child who had eaten profiteroles hug me... I had a wonderful time!) and I then discovered how much it costs to have a wedding dress cleaned. I don't know what to do with it - I can't imagine ever paying to have it cleaned so it will always be useless but I also can't imagine just putting £800 of dress in the bin!

Orangecake123 · 24/07/2020 12:42

My friend is getting married. She bought two dresses for £5000 in total as in her culture they have two ceremonies.

I bet they will also end up in a box.

MildlyFoxed · 24/07/2020 12:48

Mine was a white sundress so I wore it quite often afterwards -- dyed it a moss green once I got tired of the white. It's still hanging in my wardrobe and I wore it a couple of weeks ago to go out for dinner.

LER83 · 24/07/2020 13:08

I only got married 2 years ago, so its still sitting in the wardrobe. I need to get it cleaned as the bottom is filthy! Plus the tulle overlay is covered in small holes/rips where it got caught in some bushes outside the church! Its a beautiful dress though. My seamstress said she's altered/shortened a few dresses after the wedding into little cocktail type dresses. If I ever renew my vows I'd like to wear it again!

HoneyBee03 · 24/07/2020 13:15

You've reminded me that mine is in a ball, in a carrier bag in the bottom of a cupboard. I should probably do something about it!

GlamGiraffe · 24/07/2020 13:15

Mine is hanging in my daughters wardrobe. I gott married 11years ago (annversary tommorow)!! It was a custom made silk ball gown . I will keep it as it's very unusual and my dream dress. My daughter might want it when shes older but currently she's only 3 years old.

CromfordGreyhound · 24/07/2020 13:35

Same as Humph- I donated my dress to Cherished Gowns who make lovely items for babies who are stillborn or pass away shortly after birth.

My dress had been in a box at my parents house for 25 years whilst I decided what to do with it. Donating it to such a worthwhile cause seemed a kind thing to do for both me and the dress Smile

I'm just waiting to received photos of what my dress has been turned in to by one of their volunteer seamstresses.

The CG website gives more information;

HaudMaDug · 24/07/2020 13:47

I've never ben married but my mum made her own beautiful dress back in the 60s.
It was sort of 20s art deco style which she dyed black after her wedding.
She then wore it to many functions and balls in the 70s and 80s and I wore it in the 90s to my final school leavers formal dance.
It still hangs in her wardrobe awaiting another outing this century.

labazsisgoingmad · 24/07/2020 17:54

hmm my dresses were as bad as my weddings/marriages
first wedding was a short sleeved everyday dress and bolero which i wore a lot until it wore out
second was a long pink floral dress loved it but my idiot ex put it on a very hot wash and it was only polyester so ended up in permanent creases. i divorced him when we got back from our honeymoon
third time i thought id get a dress made it was a lavender silky dress like a proper bridesmaids dress it was made for me but it was awful. i looked huge and the front gaped terribly
i live with someone i have thought about marrying but if i do shall probably just wear jeans and tshirt!
