What films have left a bad taste in your mouth?

Spoilers, sorry! I just put a film on to procrastinate doing the housework and now im regretting it! It was called Exhibit A, on amazon prime. It was one of those found footage films so I assumed it would be a bit of paranormal silliness, but not at all. Has anyone else seen it? I just found it really really unpleasant and I think anyone who's been through domestic abuse would really struggle to watch it. Particularly horrible when you think of news stories where abusive men have just annihilated their whole family.
What other films just leave you with an unpleasant feeling afterwards? Another for me was one called Megan is Missing. It was about a girl who meets up with a guy online and goes missing. And her friend tries to track her down. It was quite good in a creepy way until the last half hour where theres a really brutal close up rape and bits of torture. Another one I went away from wishing I hadnt bothered!

The Joker. It didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth but I found it incredibly uncomfortable to watch. I don't think it helped that I was pretty heavily pregnant and with the hormones I just couldn't handle the story line and it played on my mind for a few weeks after. My partner really enjoyed it and I honestly can't understand how. It really affected me.

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 23/07/2020 10:12

I found joker uncomfortable to watch too but I must admit I did enjoy it. I wouldn't watch it again though precisely because I don't want to sit and feel uncomfortable for three hours!

Hostel actually gave me nightmares and stuck in my head

iklboo · 23/07/2020 10:23

Requiem For A Dream. I never want to watch it again.

It. Started it a few nights ago and couldn't get past the first hour.

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 23/07/2020 10:25

Oh god Hostel. I was doubly foolish and watched the sequels as well. Agree they are very unpleasant!

The Wolf of Wall Street because all the female characters were pathetic in the true sense of the word. I know it was of the time but it didn't do anything to show that thats not OK.

Enb76 · 23/07/2020 10:29

Black Swan

It felt like I was watching someone's wet dream. I don't like David Aronofsky's work at all - he was also involved in Requiem for a Dream.

CoronaIsShit · 23/07/2020 10:32

Mother! - Total unnecessary bullocks.

The Changeling - especially the scene where you could hear the boys being axed. Mucked me up for days.

Dozer · 23/07/2020 10:33

Do you mean deliberately dark/creepy films?

Many, many mainstream films. much sexism. few good roles for women. gratuitous sexual violence. Lazy cliched. few big films even pass the Bechdel Test!

Particularly dislike the bullshit trope about women who have been through pregnancy loss turning dangerous. BBC is bad for those.

Dozer · 23/07/2020 10:35

Agree about Wolf of Wall Street. Sexist film makers on that one, for sure. Shit for the excellent actresses in it.

Mrsjayy · 23/07/2020 10:35

I see I've been beaten to black swan too much masturbating for 1 film and Natalie's decent to madness through wanking was just urgh!

Gurtcha · 23/07/2020 10:36

28 Days Later. I think because the settings were so every day familiar to me and therefore completely real.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. You know what’s going to happen but you can’t stop it.
Wolf Creek. Just yuck.

RhianFuckingMorris · 23/07/2020 10:36

Wish You Were Here. Pervs and abusers must love it.
She's a victim. Young and naive despite her defensive persona. Fully abused by her dad's friend but Ive always felt the film takes it from the perspective she was a rebellious teen.
Really uncomfortable viewing.

SantanaBinLorry · 23/07/2020 10:37

The Watchmen. The rape scene was unnessacary, and was nevr depicted so 'graphically' in the graphic novel. Turned my stomach.

SauvignonBlanketyBlank · 23/07/2020 10:37

Tusk. There is a scene in it that you can't unsee.

Mrsjayy · 23/07/2020 10:39

Tbf on wolf of wall street it was an adaptation of Jordan Belfonts cocaine fulled fantasy I don't think he treated women as actual people.

Mrsjayy · 23/07/2020 10:40

On a lighter note Cats I am still not over how weird it was !

wildcherries · 23/07/2020 10:41

Parasite. It's brilliant film-making, and I'm sure I'm meant to be uncomfortable watching it. I was.

Joker. Felt like a punch in the stomach.

SheWranglesRugRats · 23/07/2020 10:41

Kids by Harmony Korine, just vile. And a disgusting film by Portuguese director Manuel De Oliveira called God’s Comedy.

MellowBird85 · 23/07/2020 10:42

Whiplash is a brilliant film but very intense.

Agree with Hostel and Wolf Creek, wish I’d never watched those films. Also Martyrs traumatised me. There’s also a certain scene in Amistad which still haunts me to this day.

snackcurator · 23/07/2020 10:42

@iklboo

Requiem For A Dream. I never want to watch it again.
This! Felt uncomfortable throughout
Scarby9 · 23/07/2020 10:43
