What films have left a bad taste in your mouth?

Spoilers, sorry! I just put a film on to procrastinate doing the housework and now im regretting it! It was called Exhibit A, on amazon prime. It was one of those found footage films so I assumed it would be a bit of paranormal silliness, but not at all. Has anyone else seen it? I just found it really really unpleasant and I think anyone who's been through domestic abuse would really struggle to watch it. Particularly horrible when you think of news stories where abusive men have just annihilated their whole family.
What other films just leave you with an unpleasant feeling afterwards? Another for me was one called Megan is Missing. It was about a girl who meets up with a guy online and goes missing. And her friend tries to track her down. It was quite good in a creepy way until the last half hour where theres a really brutal close up rape and bits of torture. Another one I went away from wishing I hadnt bothered!

@BarbiesWorld

I think it's called Red Sparrow, with Jennifer Lawrence.

Watched it on my own when DH was out one night and was still awake and upset when he got home.

I'm glad I read this thread. DH bought the DVD of this recently and we were planning on watching it together. I can't really cope with upsetting stuff right now so I'll give it a swerve.

My contribution is a Norwegian film called I Am Dina (but in Norwegian...). I can't remember what it was that upset me, but I found it very unsettling and since then I've refused to watch any of the art house films DH suggests.

Also Mullholland Drive. Icky.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

It's all a fun, jolly romp until the ending decides to turn an intelligent and sensible female character into a prize for the male protagonist. As in literally makes her the prize - anal sex with her is his reward for saving the day.

It's just misogynist, and spoils what might otherwise be a good fun film.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 23/07/2020 11:54

Also Back to the Future - the dad employs the man who attempted to rape his wife as a handyman... wtf?

Oh yes, Kingsman! I was really enjoying the film till the ending ruined it.

hellsbellsmelons · 23/07/2020 11:56

Jack Reacher films. Tom shortarse twatface Cruise as Jack Reacher? Just no
Totally agree with this. I literally can't watch but I love the books.

Same with Dan Brown books - I looooove Tom Hanks but he is NOT Robert Langdon. Not even close.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 23/07/2020 11:58

Also, most of Quentin Tarantino's films. What a misogynist that man is.

The only exception is Jackie Brown, which is also the only film that Tarantino adapted from an existing book that was written by someone else. All the female characters in his other films are treated dreadfully.

Atadaddicted · 23/07/2020 12:02

@Thateverlastingyes77

Totally with you on the changeling

Watched 10 years ago and still haunts me

Heygirlheyboy · 23/07/2020 12:04

Wolf Creek. Horrific. Stopped watching it.

The Joker was incredible because of the story I thought, stayed with me.

GodIsAnAstronaut · 23/07/2020 12:05

A Serbian Film.

DH and I watched it once about 2 years ago, and honestly, I still get flashbacks to it from time to time. Absolutely shocking movie.

I have a high tolerance with 'messed up' movies and it takes a lot to get under my skin. But shit. A Serbian Film really takes the fucking cake. I wouldn't ever advise someone to watch it.

Mrsfrumble · 23/07/2020 12:10

I’ve ranted about it so many times before, but Passengers. What the hell were they thinking?

Also agree with the ending of Kingsman. Eww.

Collidascope · 23/07/2020 12:12

Hard Candy.
That was a nasty film too.

Isnt it repulsive I loved it until the end I felt duped and grubby ! I cant watch Taron Egherton in anything else his face gives me the creeps and it's just because of kingsman.

Plops365 · 23/07/2020 12:15

Another one or A Serbian Film. I also can watch all sorts of messed up shit but had to turn that off. Felt like I was breaking the law watching it. Don’t even look up the synopsis.

fantasmasgoria1 · 23/07/2020 12:15

Human centipede - I saw about 5 minutes of it whilst someone else was watching it and I honestly thought it was disgusting. The man who was responsible for it must be sick.

Hostel - I saw half of the first one and felt very upset so if my exh ever watched it he did it when I wasn't there because it bothered me so much!

Ameanstreakamilewide · 23/07/2020 12:16

@ReceptacleForTheRespectable

I came here to give my tuppence worth about exactly the same thing in The Kingsman.

My husband didn't understand my reaction, but that one thing ruined the whole film for me.

It's like men enjoy the subversive nature of anal sex, if nothing else.
Which is an attitude that genuinely turns my stomach.

ThickFast · 23/07/2020 12:19

Yes to Dancer in the Dark. Most bleak film ever. And Dogville. Also bleak but not as bad as Dancer in the Dark

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 23/07/2020 12:23

Oof even reading some of these titles feels a but icky. Completely agree with those who have mentioned how rape has been exploited in entertainment - I also refuse to watch films like that. Riot club - so glad someone mentioned that. Very, very unpleasant.
I've heard a Serbian film mentioned on here before and remember googling the synopsis.... Jesus christ!! How is that even allowed!?

I agree with Eden Lake. Just relentless and escalating grimness.

Which you could say about Joker too Grin but I think the crucial difference is that in Joker he is very clearly a vulnerable individual who through an unlucky combination of character, circumstances and the society he lives in is brutalised into becoming a brute. It has things to say about how we treat each other thoughtlessly (rather than deliberately with bad intent as in EL) and how things like health services being cut impact the worst on those who most need them.

EL on the other hand was just gratuitous.

ThickFast · 23/07/2020 12:25

On a slightly different note, got all excited about showing the original Disney Beauty and the Beast to my four year old boy. I loved it as a kid and watched it so many times. But oh my lord the men in it! And the victim blaming. She blames herself for her dad getting lost and sick in the snow. When actually it’s because the beast fucking kidnaps her. And then she falls in love with this shouting, kidnapping abusive beast. Turns him in to a prince. Which is a terrible message. Stick with your abusive boyfriend and he might turn nice one day.

SuperStay7 · 23/07/2020 12:33

I love Wish You Were Here. It’s disturbing, but it’s brilliant.

American Beauty really gave me the creeps when it came out, and it was bloody lauded by the luvvies! Utter director’s wank fantasy. And what a surprise that Kevin Spacey turned out to be a pervy creep Hmm.

Clawdy · 23/07/2020 12:34

Pan's Labyrinth. I know it's a brilliant and acclaimed film, but the violence in it was stomach-churning and terrible, I could never watch it again.

rosegoldwatcher · 23/07/2020 12:34

I don't like horror films at all - normal life can be horrific enough.

I accidentally got sucked into a film called The Martyrs a few years ago; it actually made me sick to my stomach.

(Likewise those films about Pinhead and his pals...)

Wtfdidwedo · 23/07/2020 12:35

@Mrsjayy 2004's Crash with Thandie Newton was about racism in post 9/11 New York wasn't it? Although there was a particularly awful scene where the police officer assaults Newton's character. I loved that film.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 23/07/2020 12:41

I just read a few synopsis of those mentioned. What sort of sick mind would even think of a serbian film? I can't read it all. Wish i hadn't googled the plot at all.

Watchmen's plot synopsis is completely incomprehensible.

Mrsfrumble · 23/07/2020 12:42

There are two films called Crash. There’s the one about racism that won an Oscar, and the other one directed by David Cronenberg about shagging and car accidents. Thandie Newton was only in the first one.

I’m glad other people agree about Kingsmen. I thought maybe I was being prudish.
