What films have left a bad taste in your mouth?

Spoilers, sorry! I just put a film on to procrastinate doing the housework and now im regretting it! It was called Exhibit A, on amazon prime. It was one of those found footage films so I assumed it would be a bit of paranormal silliness, but not at all. Has anyone else seen it? I just found it really really unpleasant and I think anyone who's been through domestic abuse would really struggle to watch it. Particularly horrible when you think of news stories where abusive men have just annihilated their whole family.
What other films just leave you with an unpleasant feeling afterwards? Another for me was one called Megan is Missing. It was about a girl who meets up with a guy online and goes missing. And her friend tries to track her down. It was quite good in a creepy way until the last half hour where theres a really brutal close up rape and bits of torture. Another one I went away from wishing I hadnt bothered!

Another one here who found the ending of Kingsman ruined what was otherwise a good film.

I loathe Beetlejuice, on a lighter note. It actually turns my stomach.

CarrotCakeCrumbs · 23/07/2020 13:54

Creep was awful - still makes me feel uneasy going on the underground now. The curse of La Llorona has a few scenes that are very hard to watch, would you rather was a pretty gross film to watch and platform was a hard film to watch - it scary as such but definitely uncomfortable viewing.

CarrotCakeCrumbs · 23/07/2020 13:54

It wasn't scary*

Requiem for a Dream. The whole thing is horrible boring and self- indulgent but there's one scene that is just the saddest most abusive evil thing and it's grounded in reality. You know women are used and abused like that all the time. It really affected me.

dayslikethese1 · 23/07/2020 14:09

I hated this film called Nocturnal Animals with Amy Adams in. Lots of gratuitous sexual violence and pretty sexist I thought. I also think Fatal Attraction is really sexist though its hardly new to point that out I guess Grin

icebearforpresident · 23/07/2020 14:18

Someone else has already mentioned it but 28 days later. I love it, it’s a great film, but even watching it when first came out I was like ‘this could happen’, it was too close to reality for me for comfort. Even now it freaks me out.

Back when sky box office was still a thing I got 28 weeks later on pay per view to watch when I was home alone for the night. God knows what the hell I was thinking!

On a slightly different note has anyone watched Uncut Gems on Netflix? It’s a brilliant, intense film and Adam Sandler is amazing in it (now there’s a weird sentence) but by the time it was finished I felt physically exhausted. It’s so tense and uncomfortable to watch.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 23/07/2020 14:21

I completely agree about Kingsman, that bit at the end made me feel really disappointed in the whole film and uncomfortable. Made me question if I’m uptight but I know I’m really not. I didn’t want my teenage boys to watch it because of the anal sex reward and for them to think that’s ok.

Yeah - it's horrible. I'm not a prude/uptight and have no issue with anal sex provided both parties are fully into it (not coerced or under pressure to be a cool girl etc.).

However, anal sex provided as a reward, by a woman who he'd barely spoken to previously? It's so transactional and disturbing, she was reduced to a commodity and it was presented as all lighthearted good fun.... In the context of what young men are learning from pornography these days, it was awful.

I also agree with what others have said about Requiem for a Dream. Lars Von Trier films in general actually.

If there were lots of female directors who repeatedly made abusive films about men being sexually tortured, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't get the same 'critical acclaim' as some of these misogynistic male directors seem to attract.

Gilead · 23/07/2020 14:22

I thought Joker superb but so incredibly sad.
Jojo rabbit is absolute genius.
Forrest Gump makes me so angry. The idea that marginalised people can be anything if they live up to the American ideal.

IhateBoswell · 23/07/2020 14:27

Me, Myself and Irene. Stars off like a comedy but then Jim Carrey's character scalps someone. I wasn't expecting it and it made me feel sick.

Why can't I remember that scene at all? I need to rewatch 🤔

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 23/07/2020 14:42

EXACTLY! Couldn't agree more 👍🏻

Maybebabyat36 · 23/07/2020 14:45

Bloody hell. Rape rape and more rape. I'm so sick of how common this is in tv and film now. Awful.

Sleepers. The flashbacks were absolutely horrific and of course include the above!

I could name a lot more, but realised that they all contain rape/sexual abuse/violence.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 23/07/2020 14:47

Agree about that film- it stayed with me for a long time and I could never ever watch it again. Its just so heartrendingly awful

Lovebug06 · 23/07/2020 15:06

Hostel. Awful film. It really freaked me out as apparently it is based on what really could be happening. Awful.

I spit on your grave, the rape scene was just horrendous and haunted me.

I also found 12 years a slave haunted me. It is a great film and needs to be seen, but just so hard to watch.

Elzbells · 23/07/2020 15:08

Once upon a time in America.

I was young, naive and on a date and felt like I couldn't leave when the rape scene was shown.

It has stayed with me for over 20 years because I had no idea that things like that actually happened to a woman, the aggression and physicality of it, and made me feel really vulnerable that I was at a mans house, watching that.

I think it really was a lesson that men aren't always nice. I must have been very sheltered up to that point.

GabsAlot · 23/07/2020 15:09

ending of kingsman yes and i loved the rest.
when did jim carrey scalp someone

GabsAlot · 23/07/2020 15:12

sleepers was meant to be true but apparently no court case was ever found

MysweetAudrina · 23/07/2020 15:17

I stupidly watched the Platform on Netflix during lockdown and it really had a bad affect on my psyche. Surprised no one else has mentioned it.

ReplacementPlasticUterus · 23/07/2020 15:17

@ReceptacleForTheRespectable

Kingsman: The Secret Service

It's all a fun, jolly romp until the ending decides to turn an intelligent and sensible female character into a prize for the male protagonist. As in literally makes her the prize - anal sex with her is his reward for saving the day.

It's just misogynist, and spoils what might otherwise be a good fun film.

I agree! That ending was absolutely unnecessary and completely spoiled the film. How they thought that ending was suitable is beyond me.

While I'm here I'll agree on Wolf Creek (apparently there's a second one too), and The Ring gave me the willies for ages after watching it.

Mrsjayy · 23/07/2020 15:18

Michael Douglas did some pretty grim films but I hates disclosure with him supposed to be sexuallyharrased it was alla bit men.too. Whilst enjoying it.

AudTheDeepMinded · 23/07/2020 15:22

Donny Darko and Patrick Swayze's character, totally creeped me out.

Caplin · 23/07/2020 15:25

Knocked up gave me the rage. So misogynistic.

Screamingontheinside · 23/07/2020 15:32

.

shartsi · 23/07/2020 15:40

Blue Lagoon , just creepy filming an adolescent nude.
I also found Lolita creepy

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 23/07/2020 15:42

@MysweetAudrina omg yes! Platform is foul. There's something truly sickening about all that shovelling in of others' leftovers. I felt massively sick for the whole duration of that!

MrsMaryBOOface · 23/07/2020 15:47

Yes to the Platform, 28 Days Later, Wolf Creek, Eden Lake and some others mentioned.

The Bad Batch was pretty awful, weird, slow, scary and sad!
