I've been googling for weeks, trying to get inspiration for a suitable 18th birthday gift for ds, with little joy.
Can anyone give me some suggestions please?

I did consider it but he hasn't even had any lessons yet (he's got the money for lessons, just waiting for the instructors to start up again)

Cross-post, that was in reply to the car.
He had a watch fairly recently and openly admits something like that would get damaged

Piece of tech? IPad? Promise to pay for some experience, like concert tickets in the future or a trip with friends?
Premium bonds?

What about noise cancelling headphones? The Bose ones are great

What about an experience? Parachute jump, track day, indoor sky diving? Check out Virgin Experience Days.

Day trip to Paris?
(Caveat - i have no idea what the current travel restrictions are)

Daft question but have you asked what he'd like?
A watch is a good keepsake, or an experience thatto make memories.
You can also get a print/canvas of events that happened the year they were born or of special memories written on a number 18, not on the high street is good for things like that

It is a smaller gift (in terms of cost) but my son really liked a book of photos (photoshop) from birth to 18. I found lots of photos that he had forgotten about (yr 6 camp, secondary school trips etc). I was really surprised as to how much he liked it.
