How do you sign off work emails?

I feel this is a gap in my education! I know how to write a formal letter, but what about emails to people at work you know?

The options I see are:

Best wishes
Regards
Kind regards

All of which feel awkward. Kind regards just appeared about five years into my adult life and I'd not seen it before. I've never much liked it, but that could be associations with the person I first knew to use it! Is it quite normal really?

I usually just go with my name and nothing else. I'm vaguely aware that probably comes across as awkward in itself...

Imparting info - best wishes
Asking them to do something - many thanks

LouiseTrees · 22/07/2020 18:19

Kind Regards is all I ever see. Just name comes across as rude.

NecklessMumster · 22/07/2020 18:20

I've started copying my previous line manager with 'many thanks ' but it doesn't always fit with the email content!

ThickFast · 22/07/2020 18:20

I’ve seen some people just write ‘best’

bellinisurge · 22/07/2020 18:21

Regards.

In the current climate, I've occasionally added "Hope you are keeping well". I've noticed I get a few like that .

I'm in a very formal legalistic kind of working world so the "hope you are keeping well" is like giving an UnBritish massive hug to a stranger.

NerrSnerr · 22/07/2020 18:22

I sign mine off usually thanks, best wishes or see you soon (if I will). For 'external' people I go with kind regards (or regards if they've annoyed me)

cheapskatemum · 22/07/2020 18:22

Watching with interest as I’ve been wondering the same thing. I’ve been going with “Kind regards”, unless thanks are due, so I’m relieved to see it here.

NerrSnerr · 22/07/2020 18:22

I rarely just use regards though. Only if they've been massive arseholes.

bluefoxmug · 22/07/2020 18:23

we have a standardised footer which says 'kind regards'

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 22/07/2020 18:23

“Kind Regards” for polite.

Regards for if you hate them.

Best if you REALLY hate them.

Best regards is just wrong.

“May the odds be ever in your favour”.

CoffeePleb · 22/07/2020 18:25

Kind regards or Thanks and kind regards (I'd in thanking them)

CoffeePleb · 22/07/2020 18:25

*if I'm

ComeBackIntoTheGardenMaud · 22/07/2020 18:26

Usually "kind regards", although if I'm asking a favour it may be "hoping to hear from you soon" or similar.

Scarby9 · 22/07/2020 18:26

Usually 'Thank you', or 'If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me'. I don't know why I don't like Best wishes or Regatds, but they just don't feel like me.

MissCalamity · 22/07/2020 18:26

Internal emails: Thanks or Many thanks if I really want them to do something.

External emails: Kind Regards to most, but if someone has pissed me off it's just Regards or on a few occasions just my name of they've really really pissed me off. 😬

TinyMetalBirds · 22/07/2020 18:26

I use “all the best” , but might move on to “thanks”, “cheers” or just my initial if the email turns into a back and forth.
I start with “I hope all is well with you”, usually.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 22/07/2020 18:26

Ok, sounds like I've been unfairly prejudiced against kind regards then! I like the idea of doing that for people outside the organisation.

I'm writing an email to my boss at the moment and it's one where I really don't want to come across as rude! She's been working with me a while though, she may be used to my brusque sign off. Blush

Kind regards or many thanks. If they're arseholes they get regards!!

twilightcafe · 22/07/2020 18:27

Kind Regards or Many Thanks

PinkBuffalo · 22/07/2020 18:27

Always “kind regards”
If I just use “regards” that means i am rapidly Reaching the end of my tether!

Calyx72 · 22/07/2020 18:27

I've started saying 'Take care,

Name'

to colleagues I know personally. For others I stick with 'Regards' or 'Kind regards' or 'Many thanks'

Kind Regards,

A guy on a team near mine signs his “Keep Winning” Hmm

SlinkyStairs · 22/07/2020 18:28

Kind regards is the default.

If they have pissed me off just regards

If they have really pissed me off just name

If they have really really pissed me off I dont reply

AccountAntsy · 22/07/2020 18:29

“Thanks, AccountAntsy”.

Kind regards if I’m feeling a bit pissy.
