How do you sign off work emails?

I feel this is a gap in my education! I know how to write a formal letter, but what about emails to people at work you know?

The options I see are:

Best wishes
Regards
Kind regards

All of which feel awkward. Kind regards just appeared about five years into my adult life and I'd not seen it before. I've never much liked it, but that could be associations with the person I first knew to use it! Is it quite normal really?

I usually just go with my name and nothing else. I'm vaguely aware that probably comes across as awkward in itself...

Usually kind regards and my name (if formal) it initial if I know them well.

I have my signature set up with the above anyway. I’m lazy like that. No pronouns or political statements.

I did have a footer which had a photo of a pretty woman on it.

Someone thought it was me and was turning on the charm. I pointed to my LinkedIn account (with my photo) ‘that’s not me on the email’ and he replied ‘obviously not’ (cheeky sod - he was no oil painting himself!)

Ginfordinner · 22/07/2020 18:30

"Kind regards" seems to be the default option right now. I send a lot of emails at work - to suppliers and colleagues. Anything less sounds too unfriendly.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 22/07/2020 18:30

All the best! That's a good one. I have nice memories of that - must've been used by someone I liked at some stage!

Yes, I too start with hope you're well - did with this email. I'll look like a nutter if I end with it too. Grin

Kind regards - more formal
Regards - I secretly hate you or you have offended me
Best wishes - team colleagues
Thanks v much - informal request for help
Many thanks - more formal request for help
Cheers - mates only asking for help

OverTheRainbow88 · 22/07/2020 18:31

I guess it depends who I am emailing and why!

But yea usually use the ones you mentioned,
Or if I amAsking someone to help/do
Something I sign of with thanks...

managedmis · 22/07/2020 18:32

HATE 'best' ugh

I do:

Cheers
Cheerio
Thanks
Many thanks
Kind regards

suggestionsplease1 · 22/07/2020 18:32

Kind regards if I don't work with them all the time and something more casual if they're colleagues I speak to daily - eg, thanks, cheers or just my name if it's a quick convo. Or something a bit more personal like 'Enjoy your meal tonight / hope kids are feeling better etc, if we know each other pretty well and it's relevant/appropriate to their present situation.

SausageCrush · 22/07/2020 18:33

Mine is always 'Best wishes' unless they owe money - then it's just a curt 'Regards'

Alloverthegrapevine · 22/07/2020 18:34

I don't know how to start them either. "Dear" isn't right but neither is "Hi". I usually go for good morning/afternoon but then I dont know what to say if I'm sending something at the end of the day that I don't expect them to see until morning...

For signing off I use Many Thanks unless it's really not appropriate when I'd use Kind Regards, although I don't like it. I never use Regards, everyone knows it's used to mean anything but, so even if I am cross I don't use it for fear of seeming churlish.

octobersky19 · 22/07/2020 18:34

Kind regards,
{name)

RaininSummer · 22/07/2020 18:34

I use kind regards or many thanks but always proofread as it often changes to kind retards.

managedmis · 22/07/2020 18:34

Regards - I secretly hate you or you have offended me

Yup. Hello equivalent is not saying 'hello' I. E. :

Iklboo,

I suggest you email that report to me now.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 22/07/2020 18:34

Seems pretty clear, then.

Kind regards or regards if they're annoying me.

I can't say thanks on current email - it's a complaint not thanks or a request. Maybe best wishes? Like here's a complaint but it's not personal!

I save 'kind regards' for when I'm pissed off with someone.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 22/07/2020 18:35

Oh dear, many thanks makes me shudder. Reminds me of my ex h.

(Why do I have such emotive responses to sign offs?!)

@user1294625849274

I save 'kind regards' for when I'm pissed off with someone.
Ah. Dammit. Up until you, user, everyone was pretty much in agreement that this was nice.

Hmm.

Lol, you might be over thinking it.

I don't even read email sign offs most of the time because I assume it is an auto-signature and often dictated by the organisation so little point analysing it.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 22/07/2020 18:37

*Iklboo,

I suggest you email that report to me now.*

Yes!! I definitely do this - without consciously noticing it till now!

Over thinking - yes, almost definitely! Grin

I used to always just use regards without any alternative sentiment behind it! Shock

HM1984 · 22/07/2020 18:40

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane my old line manager used to write best to me! I always thought we got on....until now Shock

Fatted · 22/07/2020 18:40

Depends what the email is about and how much I like the person really.

Usually I use Kind Regards. If I'm asking for something I will say Many thanks. If I hate the person and am secretly wishing a low and painful death upon them I will just use my name.

WitchDancer · 22/07/2020 18:40

I always go with Kind Regards unless I'm annoyed with them and then I go with Regards. That will teach them!

belvoirbeaver · 22/07/2020 18:41

Kind regards is my standard.
Regards when I'm pissed off.
Many thanks if I'm asking someone for a favour.
Cheers is saved for those I know well and have been in a bit of back and forth with.

I hate HATE "best" I immediately put anyone who sends me an email signed off with "best" in my "regards" pile.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 22/07/2020 18:41

Kind regards - more formal, use to people I don't know
Regards - you're an appalling human being and/or you've really annoyed me
Best wishes - don't use this
Many thanks - there's an action in here so please act upon it
Cheers - genuine thank you if there's an email chain, or v familiar
Ciao or ta-rah - buddies only

Just their name, or worse, if they just use their email signature, is twatty.

I really hate seeing 'KR' or 'BW'. Lazy!
keep seeing a lot of 'stay safe' at the mo. I quite like 'take care'.
Greeting-wise I use 'good morning/afternoon' or 'hello'.
