Day out ideas near Leeds

DH and DDs (9&7) are camping near Leeds next week. Any ideas for a day out? (Campsite has easy access to A1 and M62)

So far I've thought of

  • Tropical World- closed
  • Leeds Armouries- closed
  • Coal Mining Museum- closed

Yorkshire Sculpture Park- open and a possibility.

Posted too soon!
Needs to occupy them all for a few hours, not be overly crowded (DD1 has become a bit anxious) and have toilets. Ice cream a bonus. Preferably mostly outside.

Thank you for any assistance.

Yorkshire Wildlife park has all those things, and also lions. Remember most places will prebooking rather than rocking up at the gates.

Lightwater Valley, Yorkshire wildlife park, flamingo land all within about an hour from leeds

Sammilouwho · 21/07/2020 17:00

Lotherton Hall, not sure if their little zoo but is open though. Yorkshire wildlife park are now taking bookings for August too - we went at the weekend and I would recommend either the early morning slot or the late afternoon one, it was busy from around 11.

Ilkley Moor. Climb the cow and calf rocks, play on the moor, in the river, cafe is open at cow and calf car park.

Oooo just to add, Tong Garden Centre near Bradford! Their outdoor play area is open (tickets only) but their cafe is open too and there is an awesome ice cream farm not too much further down the road :)

Harewood is a nice day out. The house has just reopened with a one way system.
Play area closed but they have put a straw maze and a few other Covid secure play ideas in.
Bird garden open (one way) as are all the gardens.
Ice cream but queue was a bit long.

Also Bolton Abbey. Both Harewood and Bolton Abbey have to be prebooked.

Whitby or Robin Hood's Bay are about an hour and a half from the A1/M62 interchange. It's a lovely drive over the moors. They can stop at the Hole of Horcum for a picnic. I was told recently that Whitby was very busy but Robin Hood's Bay was quiet.

Temple Newsam's café and toilets are open and the grounds are lovely. The farm and house are still closed.

Go Ape high ropes treetop challenge at Temple Newsam. Book online.

Thanks. They've booked Lightwater Valley... We usually go most summers, but didn't last year.

We are hoping to move back to Yorkshire next year, so hopefully can go to more of these ideas!

Lightwater Valley is fab! Hope they enjoy it.

SpockPaperScissorsLizardRock · 21/07/2020 22:13

Stocked Park is awesome and I think most of it is open.

SpockPaperScissorsLizardRock · 21/07/2020 22:14

Sorry, typo... Stockeld Park.

SpockPaperScissorsLizardRock · 21/07/2020 22:16

Also Roundhay Park and Golden Acre Park.

EwwSprouts · 21/07/2020 22:21

New theme park aimed at primary aged children. www.gulliversvalleyresort.co.uk/

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is fab.

Magna at j36 of the M1 reopens tomorrow. It has an outside water park thing, just run through things like at legoland and water is heavily chlorinated. Plus it’s so vast/cavernous inside it might feel safe enough (old steelworks) with science stuff.

Cannon hall farm near the Yorkshire sculpture park (j38), also has open adventure playground.

kshaw · 21/07/2020 22:33

Swithens farm is within Leeds. It's only quite small but a petting farm, play park. It's £6 each and have to prebook. Need some change for the carrots to feed the animals at 50p a tub. It's a nice few hours out! Cafe is like a soft play cafe but limited tables. I went last week, was nice afternoon. Not a big place though

kierenthecommunity · 21/07/2020 22:38

Brimham Rocks is good fun, my seven year old loves it there

B1rdinthebush · 21/07/2020 22:39

Pugneys Country Park is our new favourite place at the moment. There's a nice walk, playground and cafe/ice cream vans etc. Plus parking is free until September.
