How to get through the day on not enough sleep

I'm an 8 hour kinda gal and I definitely didn't get that. I think I fell asleep after 12:30 and DH woke me up at 5:45 trying to find something in the bedroom.

I've been awake since then, trying to get back to sleep, but to no avail. Too late now as I get up around 8. I've got a headache and I have that horrible wired tired feeling. I think DH is now asleep on the sofa downstairs (typical).

Need to do a full day of work (from home) in a demanding job.

What helps?

I don't drink coffee.

I find that if I keep busy I don’t notice the tiredness so much, as soon as I sit down and relax that’s it!

Maybe plan a nice lunch that’ll perk you up, something nice but not to heavy to give you some energy. I’m pretty much 90% coffee at this point so thank god I like it!

Finish work sharp and think how nice it’ll be when you can relax, bath and bed early. So sorry about your baby also OP x

Oh god I'm sorry about your son Flowers

You'll get through today okay

Tappering · 21/07/2020 09:08

So sorry to hear about your DS. That's awful.

As per suggestions upthread - water, fresh air, splash your face at intervals if you feel groggy. Try not to go for sugar because the crash will make you feel even worse.

Thank you x

I think this is a big part of it. If I walk around thinking "I've had no sleep, today is going to be a bad day" then I'm going to feel worse than if I just get on with it.

Coffee is the only thing that works for me and lots of it! Since you dint drink it you'll just have to power through, I'm rubbish on not enough sleep.

GuyFawkesDay · 21/07/2020 09:13

Fresh air. Go for short walks when you can. Work in the garden if you're at home?
Maybe a spray for your face with water in

Definitely a bacon sandwich 😁

Promise yourself a lovely shower or bath and lots of self care before an early night tonight

Red bull as a one off

CoffeePleb · 21/07/2020 09:23

@FranklyDearIDontRiverdance read the thread.

Op personally I'd go for red bull and a shit load of sugar but that's probably why I'm a bit fat and often don't sleep well Hmm

Water and a brisk walk are most likely a better bet.

Medievalist · 21/07/2020 09:25

Blimey op - 5 hours straight is a good night for me! I'm sure you'll manage.

inthethickofit19 · 21/07/2020 09:27

@AliceinBunnyland

Yeah I’m not sure on it’s accuracy but as I was up with a teething baby until 2am and got up with same baby at 6.30am I think it’s fairly accurate in this instance!

I wasn't suggesting yours wasn't accurate. The brand of watch I have is known not to be v good for sleep tracking but I'm not really bothered about that.

I would have a one year old too now but he died shortly after birth last year. Probably wouldn't mind the lack of sleep so much if he were here Sad Maybe gonna be one of those days!

I think it's good I don't like coffee otherwise I'd drink loads of the stuff!

I eat a fair bit of sugar but trying to cut down and lose weight. I will probably have a few snacks though. I'll aim for an apple for my first snack but might have a (very) mini dairy milk as a pick me up after lunch Grin

I'm on the water, enjoyed my walk to the butcher's and feel better after my bacon and sausage sandwich so feel pretty good and not allowing myself to be negative

I hope everyone has a good day

There are some foods that make me sleepy if I have them at lunchtime / cheese and bread (anything with yeast or fermented). Best to avoid alcohol too!

SerenityNowwwww · 21/07/2020 12:02

Bananas are good though - maybe a nice smoothie with banana, honey, yogurt? Mmmmm

I hadn't noticed bread and cheese do this (maybe they do so I will watch out) but I realise recently raw onions make me sleepy!

Love this but haven't got any bananas. I've got applied, oranges and nectarines...

I could go to the corner shop for bananas and put them all in a smoothie but feels a bit naughty to go to two shops during a pandemic Blush The walk might wake me up though!

Sorry OP, I didn’t mean to be insensitive. I’m usually pretty good on refreshing posts before I respond but clearly didn’t this morning. Sad

Sorry to hear about your son. I hope your day hasn’t been as bad as you thought

SerenityNowwwww · 21/07/2020 15:46

C'mon - just over an hour to go! Time for a cuppa and going through the emails/making a work plan for tomorrow.

Nearly there OP!

EssentialHummus · 21/07/2020 16:00

Hey OP - sorry about your son. Flowers

Nearly there, hope work wasn't too bad.

AliceinBunnyland · 21/07/2020 17:00

Thanks all. Today has been okay. I'm flagging a bit now but just want to send an email before I finish for the day and make a nice easy dinner
