I need help urgently mumsnet . I’ve just found out that my best friend has been catfished and have found evidence that he is a convicted fraudster on a local news archive site.
How can I search his criminal record? He has been in her house and could have stolen defrauded her.

By hacking the police national computer, of course.

Tell her to get a credit check done. And change passwords. And get a good antivirus software to do a sweep of all her tech for bugs.

He gave her a new I pad . Could that be Infected somehow??

Doubtful. iPads are generally considered to be resistant to viruses. If in doubt though, she should get it checked out.

What exactly are you trying to discover?

If he had appeared in court and there are news reports, they will give you her charges and the outcomes.

Your friend needs to check online banking, change all passwords and cancel credit cards (get new ones issued).

Is your friend aware of what you've found out?

Yes she knows. The local news report is 15 years old and said he had multiple previous convictions.
She will do a credit check etc but I thought it might be helpful to know what she is dealing with.

Changing all passwords is pretty stressful. I think calling police tomorrow is a good idea

I hope your friend is ok? Is she sure she has catfished? If the conviction is 15 years ago and your friend hasn't provided him with money or bank details, he might not have had any intention of defrauding her.

She should check for any missing documents and get her credit report and keep an eye on it for a while. Also talk to the police.

Thanks PennySea. He has told her lots of lies - maybe he’s just a fantastist, that would be best case scenario . At the moment she is not aware of any theft from her which is good. She never gave him money either. Only things were a very expensive takeaway where his card was rejected and he nicked a couple of bottles of wine as he was leaving .
