Worst book you've ever read?

Inspired by the film thread, what's the worst book you've read?

I think mine was The Miniaturist purely because it was SO hyped. It was completely overwritten, ridiculous, boring, and you'd think for that amount the author got paid, she'd have bothered to come up with an ending.

There's a book called Stoner, can't remember the authors name. It's a reissued cult classic. It is so fucking terrible I can't describe how terrible it is. It's a normal sized novel in which nothing happens, nothing is explained or explored, and nobody says anything.

If you're bored you can read my amazon review of it. I think I titled it 'cure for insomnia' or similar.

I am an avid reader. I HATE anything by Joseph Conrad and have tried and failed to read Jane Austin many times. I love Minette Walters though.

Reservoir 13
In fairness, I think this is mostly due to its misleading blurb: it definitely implied it was a who done it.
You find out what everyone within 20 miles had for breakfast each day for 13 years, but nothing more.

Normal People.

Jesus Christ. NOBODY CARES. Read like a livejournal. Finished it hoping something would happen. It didn't

Why do people write books where nothing happens?!

theluckiest · 21/07/2020 00:04

I quite enjoyed Da Vinci Code. Then I read another of Dan Brown's work (I know, I know) and it was EXACTLY THE SAME. Same formula, same plot....

I was appalled by 50 Shades. Not by the rather dull, repetitive and laughable shagging, but the truly shocking, clunky grammar.

I get very cross with anything by David Walliams. I just don't get it. Lazy characters and completely overwritten. DS wanted me to read one to him and I found myself getting wound up and thinking 'Oh, just get to the frigging point.' while I was reading.
Note Ds only asked for one...I couldn't bear another.

@Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese

Oh my god I love Private Peaceful. It makes me heart hurt. It's funny how different everyone is and how one thing can really capture one person's imagination and can completely turn another person off.

MrsMop1964 · 21/07/2020 00:13

Another vote for A Little Life. I just couldn't understand the hype around it and like a couple of previous posters I thought it was misery porn.
I am Pilgrim was another- racist xenophobic tosh.

NotEvenTheKing · 21/07/2020 00:14

Twilight, Breaking Dawn. What a waste of time that was.

myfavouritefudgecake · 21/07/2020 00:14

@Wauden I came to say turn of the screw too. I actually enjoyed studying it but in a "flippin eck this is ridiculous" kind of way. Miles is such a little creep.

Goyle · 21/07/2020 00:15

Lethal White by Robert Gaĺbraith/JKR was disappointing. I knew who the murderer was as soon as the body was discovered. Big fan of Robin though.

Northanger Abbey is dump. Worst Austen book I have read.

I can't stand Irvine Welsh or Roddy Doyle. Dawn o 'Porter can stop writing now too, please.

Giganticshark · 21/07/2020 00:15

The Handmaid's tale. Awful, boring book.

MorrisZapp · 21/07/2020 00:17

Yes, Stoner is by John Williams.

Viviennemary · 21/07/2020 00:21

Lovely bones. So creepy and horrible. Also hated The Road,

I didn’t mind Me Before You but the two sequels were two books too far.

Why does everyone who encounters the heroine call her ‘Louisa Clark’?

Yes, we get her new fella is a hottie paramedic, it’s mentioned enough times

Why do the pair of them make such hard work of everything?

Cashing in and not even at its best.

Talking of cashing in, pretty much everything that is ‘written’ by Barbara Taylor Bradford that isn’t Woman of Substance. I’m sure they’re all Churned our by ghost writers, and didn’t want to waste money on a proof reader. Entire stories, personalities and appearances change. A major character’s husband’s death is changed in the book to match the dire mini series. But I guess BTB is laughing all the way to the bank

FlashesOfRage · 21/07/2020 00:38

Anything by Dan Brown or Ian McEwan. Every sentence is just full of “do you know how smart and educated I am” vibes... and neither of them are as smart as they think they are.

The one page of a 50 shades book that a friend sent me on WhatsApp 😬 99% of the content on Literotica is better.

If you realllllly want shit though, you should try reading;
Tarnsman of Gor by John Norman 🤣🤣🤣

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/07/2020 00:41

I hated Stoner too. @MorrisZapp Relentlessly miserable and actually rather dull.

TheVanguardSix · 21/07/2020 00:44

Queenie

The Handmaid's Tale

I just couldn't persevere with either book and I did try really hard, especially with Queenie.

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 21/07/2020 00:51

50 Shades.. every other word was Oh My !! Absolute shite.

winetime89 · 21/07/2020 00:53

@DazzleCamouflage

Your bar is way too high, pps. I was about to nominate A Place Called Here by Cecelia Ahern, which I read in a spirit of total incredulity.
Whattt I love that book by Cecilia Ahern. I like all her books actually I love the magic vibe behind all her stories.
MooseBeTimeForSummer · 21/07/2020 00:56

Cloud Atlas

AmericanAdventure · 21/07/2020 01:09

Normal People. I know they were young but the characters were awful. I just didn't get it. Can someone who liked it explain why it is supposed to be good?

Gingaaarghpussy · 21/07/2020 01:18

Captain correllis (?)mandolin.
I only read it because my mother said it was good. If I remember rightly, I skipped the chapters that had to do with history. The rest of the story wasn't bad.

tulipsaremyfave · 21/07/2020 02:11

A prayer for Owen Meany. Loved all his other books but could not finish that one

DownThePlath · 21/07/2020 02:33

Oh, Life of Pi too. I had to read it for a module at uni never even bothered to finish it . Absolutely bored me rigid
