Online interview tips

I have an interview soon and it's going to be online. I'm a bit unsure because I usually like to go to the place I'm being interviewed to work at, and I like to meet the people and get a vibe for the culture. I know it can't be helped so I'm wondering how to wow at interview when it's on video call or things to avoid so I don't make it a disaster.

Any tips anyone?

If you know what tool will be used (e.g. MSTeams or Zoom) practice with it so you feel confident about how it works and know that your kit is up to scratch.

Wear a plain top.

Ensure you have flattering lighting. (Don't sit in front of a window!)

Make sure you background is as plain as possible and that clutter can't be seen.

Have a glass of water at hand.

Put some notes where you can see them, but out of sight of your webcam.

Good luck!

Oh good luck I had one last week did great over the interview and then experienced an unholy IT breakdown for the assessment task which was so easy....suffice to say I didn't get it. Good experience tho'

Look at the camera and not the person

I have one on Wednesday morning over Zoom, suffice to say I'm bricking it. I know it's going to be mainly competency based so have a few examples already. Tomorrow will preparation day starting at 9am, and going to get DP to zoom with me to make sure everything works.

So nervous, I'm going to use the data on my phone to ensure my interview doesn't go down during it

Wear a full interview outfit including shoes, have notes out of shot, pen, paper, glass of water. I had one on Thursday last week and wearing proper shoes etc helped me be in role even though I was sitting in my spare room.

Check the camera angle, background, clothes etc before hand on camera. Arrive 5 mins early. I went and sat in my spare room 20 mins before it was due to start and logged in 5 mins before.

Do you know what the interview will consist of?

Good luck!
