  • camping
  • family bike rides
  • BBQs , or eating outside
  • holidays abroad
  • do separate activities on holiday eg mum & one child horse riding, dad and other child bike ride. Always did everything together

We never did any of these but they seemed quite normal among other people I knew growing up

We never socialised with other families too, only if it was part of school/church. I was very sociable and used to be very much included with a friends family as she was an only child and much younger than the other friend’s children.

Spikeypineapples · 19/07/2020 19:00

We also never did anything on your list. Just different folk into different stuff.

YouStupidBoy · 19/07/2020 19:02

Watch TV, we didn't have one.

bingoitsadingo · 19/07/2020 19:03

no snacking
we never had people just "drop in"
we were never babysat

letsgomaths · 19/07/2020 19:04

I did most of those on the OP's list, except BBQs.
But we never did:
Cinema.
Santa.

OhTheRoses · 19/07/2020 19:04

Board games
Liked their child (mother only)
Certainly not camping or bike rides
Child centric fun

Go on holiday - mum, me and my brother would go and stay with her parents for a few days, but we never went on any kind of holiday. I first stayed in a hotel aged 18

AnnieMaul · 19/07/2020 19:05

The one thing that stands out for me is that we never, ever went out for a meal. With the exception of the occasional visit to Mcdonalds, the first time I ever ate out with my parents was when I graduated from University.

Looking back there were actually lots of things we never did though, which didn't really register much at the time. We never had a foreign holiday, never went camping. Never went to the zoo, cinema or had days out at places like that.

GracieLane · 19/07/2020 19:07

Roast dinners

heymammy · 19/07/2020 19:07

My parents never had friends round/a party, didn't go to the pub and we never went out for dinner or ordered a takeaway.

I don't think I ate in a restaurant until I was 16 and at college!

Fatted · 19/07/2020 19:09

We never really did much of the stuff on your list op. Although we did do separate things, so one sibling did dance, another sibling did swimming etc.

I do wonder perhaps if it was a money thing. When I was growing up, it was still the norm for mum to be at home and it wasn't really until I was in my teens that mums worked. So not everyone had money for holidays abroad etc.

Destroyedpeople · 19/07/2020 19:10

Well every family is different. I certainly never saw my mum or dad on a bike for example...
Nor did we ever camp.
We did do other stuff though....

One thing...there were never any photos of me or my brother on display.

My mum thought that was really naff.
But it might have been nice.

Now when I go to my dad's house there are loads of pics of his second family but zero of us. It's actually a bit weird. Sometimes I pinch myself to make sure I exist.

LockedInMadness · 19/07/2020 19:17

Never had a takeaway but that's because I don't think they existed in the late 70s/early 80s certainly not around our way, unless you count the chip shop. BBQs weren't a thing then either.

Warmhandscoldheart · 19/07/2020 19:18

Bonfire night was never part of our family life, my mum hated fireworks. I was finally allowed to go to an official display when I was 17 years old

FrameyMcFrame · 19/07/2020 19:20

Puddings

Birthday cake

Packed lunches

Ankle socks

FrenchFancie · 19/07/2020 19:24

Have a father neither drunk nor hungover at weekends. We never did anything as a family, weekends were spent avoiding my hungover and super irritable father in the living room until he was feeling well enough to start drinking again.

Aposterhasnoname · 19/07/2020 19:26

Go on holiday, go to a beach, zoo or theme park, or anyway aimed at kids really. Definitely no bike rides, camping or swimming. Never ate out, or had takeaway.

NerrSnerr · 19/07/2020 19:30

We didn't have a bonfire/ go to a display, go trick or treating, go to the fair or do any of the local traditions in the village (penny throwing etc). My mum always had a reason why but I suspect she just couldn't be arsed.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 19/07/2020 19:31

None of those on the list, the adult wants always came first.

As a result I parent very differently and they will hopefully lookmback very differently on their childhood.

RedOasis · 19/07/2020 19:31

Never got a take away. I’m in Uk. 40. Never tasted Chinese food until I was 13 and it was at a friends house. Never went on a plane. Don’t remember ever playing at anything with either parent.

GameSetMatch · 19/07/2020 19:32

We never went on family bike rides or to the beach and we only lived about a five minute walk away! We certainly didn’t have BBQs. I think we only went to a theme park once too! I think my mum tried to make us cultured I remember being dragged around galleries and historic homes, we went on a holiday once to see Monets house, I hated it as a child!

Griefmonster · 19/07/2020 19:36

@Destroyedpeople Gosh I never thought of the photo thing! But that's me too! No formal photos ever. All declared naff. So I never got a graduation photo or anything like that. And no photos up. But my dad's new wife would have photos up of her kids years later and so my dad put up a token one of me and my sister!

Destroyedpeople · 19/07/2020 19:40

Ha yeh I gave him a cute one of me and bro in infant school but it never made it into the 'gallery'. ...Grin

shinynewapple2020 · 19/07/2020 19:44

We didn't do any of those things either OP but I imagine I'm a lot older than you as no one else I knew would have done those things either when I was growing up .
