Sirloin steak... was it off?

Took steak out of freezer & defrosted out of fridge. Opened the sealed steak & it did smell bad. Sometimes there is a strong smell when you open it. I was slow roasting it so it's been in oven over 3hrs. It has a funny texture (its breaking apart but it's kind of shiny) & tastes odd (can't describe taste just nothing like steak) We only had 2 bites then discarded. What's the chances of us being ill. My LO had a little bite too.

My guess is it was off.
Fingers crossed you stay healthy.

@MrsJemimaDuck I'm pretty sure it was off. Stupidly looking for someone to reassure me 2 little bites will be fine. No one can possibly know that but in a bit of a panic as theres no way I can be off work tomo. Will the alcohol from a glass of wine kill any bugs WinkGrin

If it was in the oven for three hours, I doubt any nasty bugs will have survived.

Yup, it has been frozen and then cooked for 3 hours. Likely the beasties are long dead.

I reckon you will live but always trust your nose when it comes to food potentially being off, that's what it's there for.

On another note, why would you slow roast sirloin steak?

Sirloin steak ? Slow roasting in the oven for three hours??No wonder it .
tasted like sh*t-perhaps you should get yourself a basic cookbook-

Featherfriend · 19/07/2020 19:44

Your absolutely right. Always trust your nose. Usually I'm really fussy, was looking forward to it though. Wouldn't usually slow roast a nice steak but my LO is really fussy with meat. She will only eat soft melt in the mouth meat. Fancied beef & only beef I had in was the steak. Slow roasted in lots of butter & smoked salt. It is delicious usually. Thanks for the reassurance.

Odd to slow roast steak but hey. If it smelt bad it was probably off so if you only had a bite or two you'll probably be ok.

goose1964 · 19/07/2020 21:07

Sounds to me like freezer burn. Was the wrapping intact and thick enough for protection?

CottonSock · 19/07/2020 21:10

Agree that a 3 hour roasted steak is probably the reason it tasted shite.
