If you're a vegan what do you want on a buffet?

Impatientwino · 19/07/2020 13:22

Going away as a group later in the year and I'm looking after the food.

Going to do a buffet style spread one night and we are all meat eaters bar one who is vegan. I don't know her but I've asked all of them to let me know anything they don't like. I've got as far as planning

Antipasti platter of meats
Cheese platter
Breads and crackers
Baked Camembert
Marinated artichokes
Sundried tomatoes
Roasted peppers
Babaganoush
Couple of different houmous
Falafel
Various dips, veg crudités and crisps
Vegetable spring rolls
Roasted vegetable couscous salad

I'll get some other bits of party food to warm up as well and I think there are a few choices for her but I'm just wondering what else I can add that is tasty and fits in with the rest of the food for the others too?

So, if you're a vegan what do you want/enjoy eating on an evening buffet? Any recommendations for brands/products appreciated!

I've heard vegan cheese is a bit meh?

I obviously will put vegan foods on separate plates/platters and use different utensils etc in preparation...

Thanks!

Lots of tasty Middle Eastern salads would go well with your menu:

Tabbouleh
Pomegranate and parsley
"honee" (or maple syrup) roasted tomatoes with za'atar (served cold)
roast cauliflower florets (warm or cold) drizzled with tahini dressing (and some more tahini sauce for the falafel too please!) and pine nuts
carrots with lemon dressing and chopped walnuts
cucumber in orange blossom water
chargrilled peppers with whole roast garlic cloves and coriander
Israeli chopped salad or fattoush
Lebanese butter beans

batata harra (chilli potatoes) you can prepare ahead and reheat

that's an excellent spread but firstly, make sure the vegan is first in the queue because otherwise something will have run out (or meat juice dripped into it) before they get there. Also keep a plate of the vegan stuff in the fridge so that the vegan is able to have a second helping after the meat eaters have eaten all the other vegan food.

Anything beige this is the vegan food for my daughters tea party (we are a family of vegans) we had cheese and pineapple, mini hot dog rolls, lattice pie, sausage rolls, pizza, pizza swirls, onion rings, lindas pulled chicken mixed with sweetcorn and mayo in mini rolls, cocktail sausages, breaded mushrooms Not healthy I know but you can't be all the time Wink

Possibly a little low budget but the vegan cheese kettle chips are lush.

For vegan cheese you can't go wrong with violife epic mature, applewood smoked vegan and koko. Also violife soft cheese is the nicest, tesco also now do a halloumi.

Thanks @oohkittens she has put on the group chat that's she not keen on the fake meats so I'll need to avoid those but I'm definitely adding on breaded mushrooms. They are delicious!

@PurpleDaisies epic mature is quite new out have you tried it? But I've never tried regular dairy cheese so don't take my word for it Smile

PurpleDaisies · 19/07/2020 16:20

Yes, I was excited about it and it was horrible!

OohKittens · 19/07/2020 16:21

@Impatientwino the only breaded mushrooms I have found which are sfv are morrisons own, morrisons also do battered cauliflower which is really nice in the frozen vegan section.

Moises favourite do a fab vegan camembert, it melts really well and tastes good too.

OohKittens · 19/07/2020 16:38

Ok scrap my advice on the vegan cheese Grin

Sorry, but you can go very wrong with this unless you know that people like it. IMO most vegan cheese tastes rank, and VileLife especially so.
OohKittens · 19/07/2020 17:08

@Ginfordinner I'm holding my hands up and saying don't take my word on the vegan cheese Grin

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 19/07/2020 17:51

I honestly just don't understand all this vegetarian / vegan stuff! There are so many products out there on the market as subsititites but if you don't want to eat meat, cheese or whatever why do you want to have an artificially produced substitute that looks like and tastes like it? I had a workmate once who was vegetarian. In the BBQ season she would was complaining the meat-eaters bought out the veggie sausages and left nothing for the veggies! If you are a veggie, then go and munch on a carrot. If you are vegan go an munch on whatever has never lived!

PurpleDaisies · 19/07/2020 17:53

Are you seriously hard of thinking igiveup? I like the taste of meat and dairy. I just don’t want to eat animals or animal produce. It’s not rocket science.

Lozz22 · 19/07/2020 18:42

Violife vegan cheese is really nice. All the rest taste and smell like gone off cheesy mash

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 19/07/2020 18:45

You're not very bright @IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0...

Whether I am bright or not is not the issue here. I honestly don't understand people who "like the taste of meat and dairy" but prefer to eat synthetically produced products that taste like "meat and dairy" but screw their noses up at the animal that actually creates this taste.
PurpleDaisies · 19/07/2020 22:03

You can’t understand someone liking the animal that produces the taste enough that they don’t want to see it killed?

I personally can’t stand meat tasting products, but I’ve been vegan for nearly 30yrs and it wasn’t available until the last few years. However I can understand why it’s so popular. People don’t stop eating meat because they don’t like the taste, they stop because they don’t want to eat the remains of a dead animal. Surely that’s not difficult for you to comprehend. 🤷‍♀️

Why is it even a concern of yours? No vegan or vegetarian in their right mind would go round to yours to eat so why would it even be an issue for you?

You sound like you’re stuck in the 1980s.
