If you're a vegan what do you want on a buffet?

Going away as a group later in the year and I'm looking after the food.

Going to do a buffet style spread one night and we are all meat eaters bar one who is vegan. I don't know her but I've asked all of them to let me know anything they don't like. I've got as far as planning

Antipasti platter of meats
Cheese platter
Breads and crackers
Baked Camembert
Marinated artichokes
Sundried tomatoes
Roasted peppers
Babaganoush
Couple of different houmous
Falafel
Various dips, veg crudités and crisps
Vegetable spring rolls
Roasted vegetable couscous salad

I'll get some other bits of party food to warm up as well and I think there are a few choices for her but I'm just wondering what else I can add that is tasty and fits in with the rest of the food for the others too?

So, if you're a vegan what do you want/enjoy eating on an evening buffet? Any recommendations for brands/products appreciated!

I've heard vegan cheese is a bit meh?

I obviously will put vegan foods on separate plates/platters and use different utensils etc in preparation...

Thanks!

If she chooses to be vegan then it is her problem

If you choose to be a shit host then it is your problem Grin

@igiveupallthenames

Firstly it's not my house it's a communal holiday so I'm not the host.

Secondly she like everyone in the group is contributing to the cost of the food/trip

Thirdly she isn't demanding anything I'm just trying to be considerate.

I love that sabra baba ganoush. I could eat it by the bucketful.

Avjar is a favourite here after discovering it on holiday. I cheat if I’m in a hurry and use a jar of roasted peppers (or you can buy it in Sainsbury’s)

You can buy vegan pesto from any supermarket (normally in the free from bit) so a bowl of pesto pasta. I also make ready made puff pastry tarts. Most puff pastry is vegan then just use tomato purée as a base the veg, herbs and a sprinkle of vegan mozarella (Sainsbury's is nice). Also couscous with sundries tomatoes and other veg plus chuck in a drained can of chickpeas.

Your list sounds lovely and as a vegan I would really appreciate it.

BahMooQuack · 19/07/2020 15:46

Oh god yes Avjar!!!!!!!

mmmm

Also waitrose do a vegan artichoke pesto. I spread it on toasted bagels.

Satay veg skewers - assuming no one is allergic - the peanut sauce is really easy to make.
Chilli and salt tofu. Yum. 😊

BahMooQuack · 19/07/2020 15:47

Oh oh!! (getting excited)

I love asparagus rolls which are definitely easy to veganise. I use fresh white bread and those jarred white asparagus tips.

Impatientwino · 19/07/2020 15:48

Oh yes I love that red pepper paste - I eat it on toast! I had it last night at a friends on a rick stein dish with walnuts - it was lovely!

@baamooquack - we have a lovely Turkish shop near me that make it fresh so I buy it from there a lot Blush

An extra pudding or dish for all to share is something diiferent from planning a buffet around one person's wishes. I have a friend who won't eat onions or garlic. I cook with onions and garlic and tell her beforehand that there are onions and garlic in the dish. If I didn't use tne onions and garlic, it wouldn't be the dish I wanted to make.

Hangingover · 19/07/2020 15:48

Avjar is mad delicious. Double check your Baba when you buy it OP for some odd reason some brands add egg.

BahMooQuack · 19/07/2020 15:50

[swoons at the though of a local Turkish place making fresh baba]

[contemplates move from rural idyll to place where they have such local Turkish places]

[googles to see if anyone delivers]

The op clearly isn’t. She’s adding dishes to cater for all tastes and dietary requirements.

If I was doing the buffet, the whole thing would be vegan. You’d love me.

If your friend was allergic to onions (like quite a number of people), would you still have the same attitude?

Hangingover · 19/07/2020 15:51

igiveup No one has said this to be an all vegan buffet it's literally in the first post.

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 19/07/2020 15:53

@Hangingover

If she chooses to be vegan then it is her problem, not yours, to create a "buffet" meal for all of the party. Tell her to bring her own food. I really hate these vegetarians, pescatarians, vegans

You sound horrible

I love lentils and make an amazing lentil soup with a real stong beef and bones broth!
BahMooQuack · 19/07/2020 15:55

Also our local Waitrose has some gorgeous ready meal snacky vegan type things, Buffalo cauli mentioned up thread made me think of it.

You could easily do blinis as well with marinated mushrooms. I have seen vegan herbed cream cheeses- not sure if they are any good though. Blinis, herbed vegan cream cheese and thinly sliced beetroot?

BahMooQuack · 19/07/2020 15:57

I am starting to feel very inspired. Might join the Husband in the vegan thing. He'd fall over in shock.

Hmm not sure I could do that. I've discovered Waitrose do a pepperoni that is spicy and a bit fennely- it's amazing, I could eat the whole pack

Congratulations you're the one millionth person to use the "yeAh bUt BacUn" method of antagonism. You win a wrestling match with a buffalo where you're not allowed to use any weapons except your meat eating canines.
