If you're a vegan what do you want on a buffet?

Going away as a group later in the year and I'm looking after the food.

Going to do a buffet style spread one night and we are all meat eaters bar one who is vegan. I don't know her but I've asked all of them to let me know anything they don't like. I've got as far as planning

Antipasti platter of meats
Cheese platter
Breads and crackers
Baked Camembert
Marinated artichokes
Sundried tomatoes
Roasted peppers
Babaganoush
Couple of different houmous
Falafel
Various dips, veg crudités and crisps
Vegetable spring rolls
Roasted vegetable couscous salad

I'll get some other bits of party food to warm up as well and I think there are a few choices for her but I'm just wondering what else I can add that is tasty and fits in with the rest of the food for the others too?

So, if you're a vegan what do you want/enjoy eating on an evening buffet? Any recommendations for brands/products appreciated!

I've heard vegan cheese is a bit meh?

I obviously will put vegan foods on separate plates/platters and use different utensils etc in preparation...

Thanks!

Lovely thank you all. Lots of good suggestions thanks!

As I said above there will be plenty of everything - I don't want her to feel excluded so the buffet will have lots of choice for her and I know everyone will eat the vegan friendly foods - I want them to!

And now I want an onion bhaji! (or ten)

M&S plant kitchen do some lovely things and I haven’t come across anything I don’t like. Quite looking forward to Christmas for their nice pies as they’re lovely xx

@PurpleDaisies

protein in a buffet? Really? You aren't feeding them for life its just one meal FFS.

Yes, but it won’t be filling if there’s not enough protein.

Yes it will.

Just found these, OP,
www.plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/sainsburys-vegan-cocktail-sausages-sausage-rolls

Bean salad

Some vegannaise (vegan mayo)

Avocado / home made guacamole

Olives

What about desert? Fruit salad and dairy free ice cream

I've had some lovely vegan dark chocolate torte when I've been out for a meal but I haven't seen any to buy although I think Tesco do some vegan deserts as part of their Wicked range.

The main thing I would be aware of is what I find as a non-meat eater is that when there's veggie stuff on a buffet it tends to get pounced on first , including by all the carnivores who would moan like hell if you only gave them veggie food. (I'm talking of my family members here before anyone gets upset)

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 19/07/2020 14:37

Punjabi samosas. Am addicted to them currently.

PurpleDaisies · 19/07/2020 14:41

Yes, but it won’t be filling if there’s not enough protein.

Yes it will.

Hmm You are wrong. I’ve had plenty of vegan meals out that have left me hungry if there isn’t a decent about of protein in it.

PurpleDaisies · 19/07/2020 14:51

Are you going to be buying or cooking from scratch op?

The Tivall mini cocktail sausages are vegan, delicious and take one minute in the microwave from the freezer. You may need more than one packet...

Love51 · 19/07/2020 14:55

Labels.

@PatchworkElmer

Oh and I agree on cheese- I like Violife Epic Mature Cheddar, and Tesco do a grated mozzarella alternative which is really nice, but they’re the only 2 I’ve found that I really like.
No they're not. They really aren't. We call the brand vile life because it tastes so disgusting Grin

Are you going to be buying or cooking from scratch op?
Err a combination of both. I'll prepare some things at home and some things at the cottage plus open lots of packets.

Violife tastes like feet.

Vegan cheeses are really personal taste. There are a few I like but plenty more I detest. There’s isn’t much in between.

okiedokieme · 19/07/2020 15:08

Samosas are a good bet, an individual size vegetable tart (cheese free obviously) is a good idea so they get something set aside just for them

BahMooQuack · 19/07/2020 15:10

I just started wittering on about baba ghanoush but then re-read your list!

Jus rol is vegan and you can do some gorgeous pinwheels made with vegan pesto and tomato.

MirandaGoshawk · 19/07/2020 15:17

What you've suggested sounds good. I also would suggest some sort of bean dish, maybe butter beans in tomato sauce. Lots of salad. I love grated carrot with lemon juice. Tabouleh is my absolute favourite. In fact Middle Eastern dishes in general are great.

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 19/07/2020 15:32

If she chooses to be vegan then it is her problem, not yours, to create a "buffet" meal for all of the party. Tell her to bring her own food. I really hate these vegetarians, pescatarians, vegans, ovo-lacto etc. etc. If you are invited somewhere and accept the invitation then you 1: eat what is on the table 2: don't eat anything ( a spoon or a fork could have been used in the kitchen that had been used to previously stir a dish with meat, fish, eggs, cheese, milk or whatever 3: bring your own food. You are invited to someone's home, you eat what is served or you decline the invitation. You do not tell the host/hostess what he/she can offer.

Impatientwino · 19/07/2020 15:34

The baba ganoush is a selfish addition for myself if I'm honest - she might not get a look in GrinWink

I could live on that and pitta quite merrily!

I've forgotten jus rol is vegan - excellent tip I'll make some nice nibbly things!

I'm so hungry now!

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 19/07/2020 15:37

You do not tell the host/hostess what he/she can offer.

Decent hosts/hostesses ask if there’s anything you can’t/don’t like to eat. I always offer to bring my own food but nobody has ever said that’s necessary, unless it’s an extra pudding or dish for all to share. The op clearly wants to cater for this person. It’s a good thing hardly any people have your attitude.

BahMooQuack · 19/07/2020 15:38

Op do you make your own baba ghanoush? I'd love your recipe if so.

I adore the Sabra brand. It's really authentic. At our local health food shop you can get purple tortilla chips (made with purple maize) and that and baba ghanoush is my secret 'dirty' meal.

Jus rol is the bomb. DH is vegan (and I used to be). I love wrapping Linda McCartney sausages with jus roll and makiing sausage rolls.

Don't you sound delightful @IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 Hmm

When I invite friends to my house I want them to feel welcome, and part of that is providing food that they can eat. You sound extremely selfish and unwelcoming Hmm

Disclaimer: I'm not vegan, I'm not even vegetarian, but I'm nice to my guests.
