New car problems

I bought a second hand car on saturday. It’s an old banger, 100,000 miles on the clock, 2010 plate. I bought it from a dealership (not a private seller) for £2,000. I know it’s an old car but it’s all I could afford. I took it for a test drive and it drove fine but I know very little about cars. Today, whilst driving it, the “engine management” light has come on. The dealership is now closed but I will ring them tomorrow. Do they have to repair it? Or will they just say it’s not their problem? I hate confrontation so I am really anxious about this. Luckily I have taken out a warranty with a private company so that may be an option but want to try the garage first. Any tips on what I should be saying?

Did they offer a warranty? Do they know you have the warranty from the private company?

Personally, I'd be calling the garage and trying to get then to sort the problem as a 'goodwill' gesture.

Check out Trading Standards and see what they advise. Did you pay any of it on a credit card as sometimes this gives you extra consumer protection, I think.

Very annoying for you though. Flowers
