If you don't wear a mask from next week

You will be most welcome to sit next to me on the bus or train.

I won't give you a wide berth in a shop (just a normal British awkward one!) Wink

I understand that you have your reasons for not wearing a mask and I respect them.

Why didn’t they do their bit before?

Piss off with that. We have been doing our bit by observing social distancing, avoiding seeing our loved ones and making sacrifices all over the place.

wanderings · 15/07/2020 21:16

"Permission"? We've always had permission to wear them. What we had before was Her Majesty's government telling us masks were ineffective, as well as enough mixed messages to rival God deliberately mixing up the languages of the world.

BacklashStarts · 15/07/2020 22:02

The social distancing rule is still 2m, only less (1m) with mitigations such as mask/visor/screen

I don't think anyone should be welcoming strangers in closer proximity than that.

Completely agree. This is about keeping contacts down. I think we should have all been wearing masks awhile back. But that said, I do see why they are introducing now because we’re all just out and about and in enclosed spaces so much more. There really wasn’t much point in wearing a mask back we’re all only allowed to leave the house once a day. Now that we can go to Primark and touch all the clothes and have people squeeze past then, yeah, masks make usually more sense because I am exposed to hugely more contacts.

Some people are exempt from wearing masks but it is a very small number of people so if you’re seeing multiple people on this fictional journey not wearing masks it’s not because they’re exempt it’s because they’re dicks.

NightSpot · 15/07/2020 22:45

I was wearing a mask before, and will continue to do so. I also understand others can't, cos I am not a dick. I also realise others won't, cos they are dicks. Such is life!

The condom and baby shower analogy

How witty and clever

Hmm
Ginkypig · 16/07/2020 01:58

I think if I'm understanding your post correctly that I like the sentiment but really it should be something like

I won't judge you because I don't know why you aren't wearing a mask but we will keep a safe distance as much as we can because all of our safety is paramount.
So if you are not wearing a mask that's ok by me but 2m please have a lovely day.

HeIenaDove · 16/07/2020 02:00

YY @PurpleDaisies

I didnt see reams and reams of threads admonishing people for going on ski trips/cruises/Cheltenham after the virus was already well known about.

THEN the concern wasnt for others. The concern THEN was "i will lose money/my deposit if i dont go"

Why wernt THEY doing their bit before?!!!

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 16/07/2020 02:11

If you don't wear a mask wear a face covering shield or hat! It's cheaper than a fine and may save your and some else's life! Would you insist your ICU Covid doctor looking after you if you get very ill not wear one?

Combatting Covid requires a level of ultrism and sacrifice. Either everyone makes a relatively small sacrifice or a minority will make the ultimate sacrifice!

What's with next week? Something extraordinary happening?

BF888 · 16/07/2020 02:28

Can we remember that some people will be advised by medical professionals that it’s in their own interests not to wear a mask. Don’t treat them like they’ve done something wrong. If they social distance at 2m then it’s still honouring respectful Yet safe distance between others. What I have noticed as someone who hasn’t worn a mask, those who have been wearing them feel it’s ok to get into my space in stores. I also think it’s filthy for people to wear gloves that look dirty to rummage through groceries. Hygiene and precautions come in many ways and it’s important to not put the focus on just the mask.

AlternativePerspective · 16/07/2020 02:41

Mn HQ please can we have an anti maskers topic....? Or could we have the million mask threads removed to the corona topic which most normal people have hidden?

As an aside, I have just seen something which states that Japan have had less than 1000 deaths despite the fact they are four times more densely populated than the US, and the reason for that is that everyone wears a mask.

All this wining and snivelling about not wearing masks is the kind of thing which will put us back in lockdown. Or perhaps people would deserve that?

FGS grow the fuck up.

Bluesheep8 · 16/07/2020 07:04

But cant you be fined for not wearing one? Isnt it £100 reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days?
Fined for not wearing one in shops or on public transport I mean.

So it's wear one or risk being fined as far as I can see, it seems to be as simple as that...

There are plenty of exemptions to the requirement to wear a mask and it is debatable as to whether it will be enforced at all. Shops aren't allowed to detain people until the police arrive and won't want to lose more business anyway, the police say they don't have enough manpower.

Basically most people will have to wear them if they go outside or face social disapproval.

This is likely to be really difficult for people who are unable to wear masks or who are not required to do so as the only way of enforcing it is going to be shitty comments and behind the back bitching - exactly what people who are exempt for medical reasons don't need.

user1493413286 · 16/07/2020 07:13

The number of people who genuinely can’t wear a mask is quite slim but if you go on public transport there seems to be quite a few of those people.
You can respect people having their reasons but also not want to go near them; it doesn’t make you any better of a person if you are happy to be close by to them. Quite frankly if someone can’t wear a mask then you should give them space for their own safety as much as anything.

PaperScissorsRock · 16/07/2020 07:22

Condom/baby shower analogy is ridiculous.

Over 40,000 people have died in the UK.
More will die.
Mask wearing can help control that.
This virus isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The government have left this too late, yes, but starting now is better than not at all.

I am vulnerable to respiratory illnesses, I have low o2 levels even when I’m feeling fit and well.
I understand that a very small number of people cannot wear masks, but I will not go near them.
