How long have you had your current phone number?

Got my new SIM and did the usual request my Pac code thing and can now put it in my phone and get my existing number transferred. But then I thought....I could just get a new number...... but....I have had the same number for about 16 years!

Do you lot always keep your number?

I get loads of PPI rubbish calls which would disappear if I got a new number but then I would have to let everyone know my new number from the doctors, to dentist to the vet, work etc and that seems like a faff.

What do you do?

@eurochick I’ve never had a problem with this phone, but when we lived overseas both DH & I had issues with our recycled numbers.

DH repeatedly got phonecalls from someone who would leave voicemail messages to her dad. He texted back a few times to say that it wasn’t her dad’s number but the calls kept coming. Not all the time, but like once a month or so. They were normally just general catch ups on what she’d done that day, or asking for advice on something. DH stopped listening to them because it felt weird. They slowed down after a while but then one came out of the blue after months of silence. He listened to the message because he was so bemused that they had started up again, and it was all about how much she missed him, how much she wished he was still here etc and then that she was pregnant and she was so sad that her baby would never meet its Opa. Sad We finally realised that her dad had obviously died and she was clearly just calling for her own comfort. Heartbreaking. It made us think that they had recycled the number pretty quickly.

I had quite a few calls looking for someone else but they never left a message and if I answered they hung up. The calls kept coming though and they unfortunately when I googled the number I discovered they all came from a rather notorious prison in the next state over! Shock Definitely made me wary!

I'm another 21 years... it seems a lot of us got our mobiles in the hay day 20-23ish years ago 😁

Dhalandchips · 14/07/2020 23:20

Oh wow, I thought I was unusual having had the one number for 21 years! I guess not! My first and only mobile number.

BillBaileysBum · 14/07/2020 23:22

Oh god am I the oldest??
25 years Grin

21NewNames · 14/07/2020 23:48

Sorry, @BillBaileysBum, I have also had my mobile number 25 years!

Landline is 26 years!

Fartleking · 14/07/2020 23:56

My mum has had the same phone number since I was 3. She recently got rid of the land line but they let her keep the number (not UK), I'm 44 now.
I got my number in 2001 when I moved here, so 19 years!

MiniMum97 · 15/07/2020 00:00

Since I first got a mobile phone which was at least 20 years ago as it was when I was with my son's dad and we split when he was 3 and he's now 23! In fact, my sons dad and I got our first phones at the same time and our phone numbers are only three digits different.

Pain in the arse to change numbers. Just register your number with the telephone preference service to stop unwanted calls and texts.

I get the odd one from a scammer as they won't stop those but it's very rare.

Vickmo · 15/07/2020 00:04

I've only ever had one! Probably coming up to 20 years now.

DramaAlpaca · 15/07/2020 00:06

I've had mine 21 years, since moving to the country I live in. DH and I bought a phone to share (yes really, seems weird now) as soon as we arrived, it was a very basic Nokia. After a while he got another phone and I kept the original one and its number.

caringcarer · 15/07/2020 00:51

About 20 years.

BigFatBloomers · 15/07/2020 01:07

27 years.
Paid to have a memorable one as it was for business back in the long forgotten days when you could do that.

RainbowMum11 · 15/07/2020 01:26

23 years - since my very first mobile ever!!!

happymummy12345 · 15/07/2020 01:26

Since I was a teenager. I'm 27 now.

2ndAugust · 15/07/2020 20:32

25 years! It’s the only number I have ever had. Me and three friends all have our original numbers. It’s weird - I am kind of attached to it! DH is changing his after 24 years as a fresh start!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/07/2020 20:36

@Chickencalledberyl me too, no one ever believes me when I say I chose my phone number.

The BTcellnet was a concession stand in the local co-op dept store. Literally a desk in a corner. Must be 22-23 years ago.

Jimdandy · 15/07/2020 21:33

Since 2004 and I wouldn’t give it up now.

ThatDamnScientist · 15/07/2020 21:36

I've had mine 10 years and moved it from different networks. DH since the dawn of time! (Ok for 20 odd years).

AnotherBiteMe · 15/07/2020 21:40

Since 1994.

TheMurk · 15/07/2020 21:42

25 years!

First got a phone in 1995. A Sony Ericsson.

Great days. Things were better back then.

RustyBear · 15/07/2020 21:45

I've changed my mobile number once, I think when I got my first iPhone 12 years ago.
But I've had 4 Landline numbers in the 29 years we've lived in this house - first they changed the area code from 4 figures to 5, then changed it completely, and finally added yet another digit.

Pegase · 15/07/2020 23:12

Same as you OP- around 16 yrs I think!

Fartintheloft · 15/07/2020 23:48

For some reason the thread title reminded me of The Game.... sorry! Grin

Anyway... had mine for around 10 years, wouldn’t swap now!

marypoppinsreturns · 15/07/2020 23:58

I've always had the same number too, since I got my first phone, so I think 22 years for me as well.

farfar · 15/07/2020 23:59

23 years for me.

Jennygentle · 16/07/2020 00:03

Only about 5 years, when I got my first smartphone Shock
