MIL getting married and selling her house

MIL (widowed) has announced she’s engaged to a man she’s dated for less than a year. Both are aged 70. He wants her to sell her house, move in with him and spend the proceeds. Currently she’s secure in her own home, no mortgage, cash and pensions to support herself. We’re very worried about her future. I’m arguing with DH because I’ve said if she ends up in the shit we won’t be bailing her out and she won’t be moving in with us. DH insists he can’t talk to her about the situation because she’ll just get angry and take the huff.

It seems your making some assumptions op. If he is putting her on the deeds then there is no issue here, if your husband can’t talk to her about it I think you just need to let it go.

Your dh needs to speak to her even though she will get shitty. At least then his conscience is clear if it goes tits up. Your mil would be a fool to sell her house if the new husbands house won't be legally half hers once once their married.

If she has a widow’s pension from her late husband and she remarried, she’ll lose that

It's not always dodgy.. my dm married her now DH (who is just wondeful) when she was 66, him 76. They did however sell both their houses and buy one together, 50/50. They've also done wills together. If your mil won't listen to you about getting married, at least approach her about getting her/their paperwork in order.

That's different because your DM now has a joint asset, the OP's MUM could end up with no asserts and her cash all spent on 10 cruises and a car and would be gone forever.
