Packing cubes, are they useful?

As above!

I love mine so much I have four sets. Very useful on a multi centre trip when we stayed in 6 hotels. So easy to pack enough in each cube for a couple of nights so no need to constantly pack and unpack the case. Also very useful when we go away as family to keep everyone’s stuff separate.

landoflostcontent · 11/07/2020 18:57

I love them and also use them to store out of season clothes. On holiday I tend to leave underwear etc in the cubes and things don't seem to crease so easily. One big plus is that if your suitcase should burst open in the airport is that you only have to pick up the cubes instead of collecting various bits of underwear that have got themselves over a wide area Grin

Soontobe60 · 11/07/2020 18:57

Instead senthem, myndh desnt see the point 🤣 His clothes arrive usually creased up whereas mine are not. I have one cube for things that will be hung up, one for things that will go into drawers still in the cube, one for underwear, one for swimwear and pyjamas and one for shoes. During the trip, I use a couple of the bigger ones for dirty clothes which I sort ready to throw in the washer when I get home.

withadivinebeatlesbaseline · 11/07/2020 18:58

Love them although I bought cheap ones and half the zip pulls are broken. I also have a couple I the change bag with nappy/wipes/cream and one with spare set of clothes so can grab and go.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 11/07/2020 19:06

The ones I have are Medium/Small assorted. Because I have different colours I can't swap them around!

Tie a ribbon around the handle or one of the zip pulls. I've also been known to sew name tags on Blush

TheRealHousewife · 11/07/2020 19:06

Does anyone have a link to share for some quality cubes they would recommend, please?

chipsandpeas · 11/07/2020 19:07

compression ones are the best imo

Blackcurrant66 · 11/07/2020 19:09

They’re not just useful they’re essential as far as I’m concerned. Compression ones are good if you need to save space. When I arrive at my hotel I just put the cubes straight into the drawers or wardrobes. No unpacking, nobody’s clothes muddled up.

Parker231 · 11/07/2020 19:10

@TheRealHousewife - I’ve got several sets from Amazon. They all seem of a similar quality. I wouldn’t be without them particularly for holidays with multiple stops.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 11/07/2020 19:10

I have the Amazon basics packing cubes linked above. They are absolutely fine. My ebags ones are the best, but i cant find them anymore. I haven't had any of the expensive Eagle creek ones to compare

RedCatBlueCat · 11/07/2020 19:19

Love them.
We use compression packing cubes. Definitely get more in a suitcase, and it makes unpacking, replacing, or multi stop places where you need different stuff much easier.
Think our preferred ones are by gonex.

1940s · 11/07/2020 19:20

LOVE mine and I'm not an organised person by nature. I find it so easier to see what I have in my case and unpack easier too, I throw my pj one on my bed, my underwear one in the drawer and the clothes one stack in the wardrobe if I do t have time to hang. Love them

mencken · 11/07/2020 20:17

not for backpacking, pointless extra weight and faff. Can possibly see a need in a suitcase but haven't used one of those in years.

backpacking; knickers and socks in one side pocket, toiletries in one washbag, everything else in layers in the rucksack. Shoes in the separate bottom compartment. Done.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 11/07/2020 20:36

If im doing hand luggage only I do actually travel with a backpack (I need hands free). I have an Osprey transporter, doesnt have many fixed size pockets, just a big flexible space I can fill with packing cubes. Because it's so simple it also packs down into its own minibag when its done. So they can be very useful if you are travelling backpacking style. Depends on how you use your pack. Increasingly my day packs are the same, a big space I can divide up flexibly with cubes

Toddlerteaplease · 11/07/2020 22:27

Hmm, I'm only away for a week, but staying in 4 different places. It's just me though. So don't have to be super organised!

CMOTDibbler · 11/07/2020 22:45

If you are moving round, then thats when they are essential as you don't unpack each time, and everything stays neat. I take a drawstring bag to compress dirty stuff into, but otherwise everything stays in its cube and then just chucked back in the bag

margotsdevil · 11/07/2020 22:56

I find they help remove the fear of leaving items lurking at the back of a hotel chest of drawers - because I just pop the cube in the drawer there is no chance of a random pair of knickers being missed!

Also I can manage to travel hand luggage only now - for some reason I find everything just "fits" in the case better. Plus as I ALWAYS get pulled at security for a bag check it saves a red face when they are checking through..,

Aria20 · 12/07/2020 09:51

I've gone crazy and ordered all 5 of us our own colour set of packing cubes... I'm actually excited about packing them - geek alert!

BrutusMcDogface · 12/07/2020 11:01

I've gone crazy and ordered all 5 of us our own colour set of packing cubes.

I have them in my basket and am very close to clicking “buy now”....but we really shouldn’t be spending the money, and I dread to think what my dp would say! 🤣

violetbunny · 12/07/2020 11:10

I always use them. They're especially useful on longer trips, e.g. when moving locations every couple of nights, because it's very easy to find everything and to re-pack. I have lots, so enough to keep various types of clothing separate (underwear, tops, bottoms, workout clothes, etc).

Chrysanthemum5 · 12/07/2020 11:15

@Aria20 I will join you in the insanity! I've just bought 4 sets for us to all have our own colour. I'm hoping it will force the teenagers to be slightly more organised and save me time Grin

Aria20 · 12/07/2020 12:11

Bet eBay and amazon are seeking lots inspired by this thread! Told my DH they will be arriving mid week and he rolled his eyes and said why do we need those...Grin when they come he will love them too tho as he is also an organisational geek!

Pertella · 12/07/2020 12:24

I used zip up bags from flying tiger to keep pants, socks, flip flops etc. bundled together so I'm going to give the packing cubes a go as well now 🤣

Nefelibata86 · 12/07/2020 13:48

Wouldn’t be without them now. Make finding things so much easier.i tend to group them ie toiletries, tops.

Parker231 · 12/07/2020 14:25

Once you start using them you can’t imagine packing without them. I like rolling T-shirt’s and shorts and lining them up in a packing cube. Easy then to go to that cube when I want a new day’s outfit.
