Does anyone remember this 80s/90s picture book about a family of dragons?

It's a very vague memory but I know I loved reading the book (or possibly books, there may have been several) at school in the early 90s. There were no people in them, just an anthropomorphised dragon family wearing clothes, going to school etc. They were a similar level to to the Allan Ahlberg books, but definitely a different author. Lovely colourful pictures.

I've googled the heck out of it but to no avail - I just don't have enough detail to do a good search. I think it needs someone to go "Yes! I remember that!", hence giving in and posting here Smile

Elmer Elevator stories?

emojisarentwords · 10/07/2020 02:15

I remember!!! Can't remember what they were called though. Potentially penguin books about a family of dragons, breathing fire all over the place!

TenShortStories · 10/07/2020 02:17

Thanks for the suggestion - I was ridiculously excited to see a reply in the middle of the night! I googled, but unfortunately no Sad

Ooh, thanks emojis, that sounds promising! Will have add Penguin publications from that era to the search criteria and see what comes up...

It wasn't 'the dragons egg' was it?

emojisarentwords · 10/07/2020 02:21

This is the cover of one of the books.

No, not that one emojis - they look more like dragons dressed up as people, walking on their back legs etc. Good call though!

Thanks for the suggestion Jenasaurus but no, the ones I'm trying to remember were aimed at probably age 4-8, those look to be for quite a bit older.

The Family Ness? There was a cartoon series, but they could have been books as well.

TenShortStories · 10/07/2020 02:37

I did love the Family Ness but it wasn't that. Thanks for the idea - I will be humming the tune from it now!

Dilly Dinosaur?

TenShortStories · 10/07/2020 02:41

Dilly Dinosaur - another great suggestion but not the one!

The Last Noo Boo by Jill Murphy? About giving up your dummy. There were possibly more in a series.

TenShortStories · 10/07/2020 03:26

The last Noo-Noo is a blast from the past Grin Not the one still, although I'd say the illustration style is the closest match yet.

I hope you find them, op, and when you do I hope they don't disappoint. Flowers

Thanks @35andThriving, I hope so too!

Good Night, good knight? Not sure what era that was though?

Witchinghour1 · 10/07/2020 14:23

I thought Dennis the Dragon too. I remember a book about him saving Christmas/ the town when he used his flames to bake the bread...?

Witchinghour1 · 10/07/2020 14:24

Here’s the page where he breathes the fire...!

Dollywilde · 10/07/2020 14:25

I’ve never heard of Dennis the Dragon but @witchinghour1 if you’ve remembered correctly I think the author probably has a decent case against John Lewis for pinching the idea for last year’s Xmas ad Grin

tutorwho · 10/07/2020 14:25

My first instinct was one of these books - www.patience.co.uk/john/fairy-tales-original.shtml

In the Hubble Bubble book, the story "The Witch Next Door" ends up helping kids turn into dragons to go to school.

I know that isn't the story though.

Witchinghour1 · 10/07/2020 14:27

You’re right, Dollywilde! I never made that connection- good, old Dennis the Dragon. I collect ladybird books and so got a lot of good stuff from the 80s.
