I can't believe they are doing this.

At 9.10 this evening they set up roadworks from just down the street from me and are using Industrial power tools at this time of night.
I really needed an early night tonight and that's not going to happen now.
How can this be a thing?

Sympathy for having to put up with it BUT the are only allowed to do it for emergencies.

IE Gas leaks, water leaks or electrical faults.

It's a one off and you will just have to put up with it.

Get some earplugs if you can. We had a major power surge in our road a few weeks ago. Total power failure for 20 hours. electricity board company worked round the clock in the road to sort it. They even banged on our door at 2am to assess the damage and check our supply issues. most people in the road had several electrical items such as TVs, power sockets Computers, microwaves destroyed. All replaced within a matter of days by brand new items but it was a pita at the time and there was a vulnerable old lady in the flat next door who we were all trying to help make sure she was ok. Electricity board were very good though. So work being done now In your neighbourhood is probably very necessary I’m afraid.

Bonkersblond · 09/07/2020 22:26

We had this to restore the electricity in our house, arrived home to no electric, they started digging up the road about 9/10pm and finished about 2/3am, brilliant service, you might need it yourself one day.

FattyBoom · 09/07/2020 22:26

Be grateful you don't live over the road from a railway track - then you randomly get periods of overnight works/floodlights/shouting/noisy equipment

It's shit but necessary, I feel your pain OP

HairyFloppins · 09/07/2020 22:28

It's a pain but it's probably emergency. We had been without power for two days at one point in the winter and they were out in the evening trying to sort it but someone complained and they had to stop.

Hope they stop soon for you though I completely understand how annoying it is.

BlueBrian · 09/07/2020 22:29

Well at least they're not cutting off your electric at the same time , that happened to us, loads of noise through the night and no electric, what fun.

AuntyPasta · 09/07/2020 22:35

If you haven’t got ear plugs you can listen to white noise with headphones. There are 10 hour videos of it on YouTube.

You can't call in sick for lack of sleep surely? I wouldn't have the guts to call my boss and say that?!

You can, depending on your job. If your lack of sleep will put others in danger eg. if you're a bus driver/pilot, then you shouldn't go to work. If not, I'd say you just have to suck it up, especially if it's only one night and not a prolonged period of sleep loss.

The OP does say she has a medical condition though and perhaps her fear of not getting enough sleep and being unwell the next day has made her unreasonably annoyed at the late night works. Totally understandable.

Itsjustabitofbanter · 09/07/2020 23:13

It’s not even that late..

rwalker · 09/07/2020 23:21

There are MASSIVE restriction on working in roads at that time of night it's ether an emergency or it's a traffic sensitive rd ( main route ) for this to be allowed

RhapsodyandAshe · 10/07/2020 07:22

It was fine, they finished quite quickly.
With my stuff, my management are quite aware of what lack of sleep does to me. And I have dragged myself into work after a bad bout of insomnia but it wasn't good for me and meant that things that were bad happened.
Anyway managed to sleep though still majorly tired. At least tomorrow I don't have to get up early and hopefully I will be asleep by half nine tonight.
Hope everyone has a good day.
