How long does lymecycline take to work?

Been prescribed this for cystic acne, a 3 month course. Only about 5 days in but my skin is getting worse. Anyone have any experiences with it?

This didn’t work at all for my DS’s cystic acne I’m afraid op.
He ended up on Rouaccatine, prescribed by a dermatologist, and although some of the side effects were not pleasant it did the job.
His acne completely cleared up and has (touch wood) never returned.

It worked for me, made me feel a bit sick. Think it was about a month before I noticed any difference.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/07/2020 21:55

I think mine calmed down quickly but I still took roaccutane.

Are you on 400mg?.

Sorry, it didn't work for me either. I ended up on Roaccutane too (but that did work).

My 15yo DS was prescribed this & I'm pretty sure we were told not to expect any real improvement for the first 4-6 weeks. DS's skin is much better now after about 4 months. Suspect it would be better still if he remembered to take it every day!

4 weeks to kick in then beautiful skin for 5 months. Few weeks later my cysts on chin restarted. Got moved to low dose Roac for a short course. Have been off it for over a year. Only one cyst in those 14 months.

PeggyBundy · 09/07/2020 22:56

About a month then for the first time in my life I had lovely clear skin. Came off them and acne returned. Went back on them and it went again. I’m still taking them.

ParadiseLaundry · 10/07/2020 06:25

It didn't work for me either and like a PP said it mage me feel sick

Halfstonehomerun · 10/07/2020 06:33

I think about four weeks for me, this was while ago and I stopped it during pregnancies. I was moved to the topical application Zineryt And that has been brilliant for me.

Bagelsandbrie · 10/07/2020 06:37

Didn’t work at all for dd aged 17. She’s on roaccutane now and that’s the only thing that’s done anything at all.

yikesanotherbooboo · 10/07/2020 06:39

4-6 weeks.
To get roaccutane in this area you have to have tried the other options that are suitable for you first ie topical medications including antibiotics ,the contraceptive pill and 2 oral antibiotics.
Continue your topical treatments ( not antibiotics) while you are taking limecycline and return to your GP if you are getting significant side effects or if scarring is getting worse.

JMG1234 · 10/07/2020 06:54

My son had limecycline. I'm struggling to remember the exact timings but I definitely remember it getting worse before it improved so maybe give it a few weeks.

He went through the various treatments for a couple of years and also ended up on Roaccutane. I'd echo the comments about side effects (particularly nose bleeds and very dry lips for him) but it worked brilliantly. Hopefully you'll find your current medication does the job for you though.

Thanks everyone. Good to know that it’s unlikely to have an effect for a while.

For me the trigger seems to have been taking folic acid - I had a folate deficiency and was prescribed folic acid and my skin just went insane and now they will not go even if I take a break from the supplements, but then they make me feel more well so it’s swings and roundabouts!

Will give it a few more weeks and see how it goes :) It’s just so painful and I look monstrous

It never worked :/

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/07/2020 13:18

@SinkGirl What dose are you on?.

SinkGirl · 10/07/2020 21:47

Just looked - it’s 408mg

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/07/2020 22:19

Same as I was on then. How long did they say to try it for?.

My gp did a 4 week follow up on them.

SinkGirl · 11/07/2020 09:29

They’ve given me 12 weeks worth and only just over a week in so will see how it goes. It has really messed up my gut so far but otherwise it’s okay so will keep going!

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/07/2020 09:40

Are you taking them on a full stomach?.
