If anyone has this ceiling light, please can you tell me how to change the bulb before i just embrace living in the dark forever? I’m sure it is just not possible.

Can't you unscrew the lower silver bit to replace the bulb?

AdamantEve · 09/07/2020 17:07

No that part is attached to the metal prongs which go into the ceiling, presume that’s where the wiring is. It’s just the least obvious thing I’ve ever come across. I’m renting this house and really don’t want to have to ask the landlord how to change the lightbulb!

Is the bulb screwed in with the bottom of the bulb facing down? Do you just unscrew the bulb? Looks like the top of the bulb sticking up.

or buy a lamp

Is the bulb the little pointy bit at the bottom? Does the bulb unscrew?

Knittedfairies · 09/07/2020 17:13

If it isn't immediately obvious how to do it - which it isn't! - I can't see anything wrong in asking the landlord. He/she would probably prefer that to you damaging the fitting.

AdamantEve · 09/07/2020 17:52

The pointy bit is just glass, the bulb that goes into it is a tube type bulb that sits lengthways in the top of the silver circle. Not at all obvious how to remove/ replace the bulb but don’t want to be too explorative as don’t want to break it. Never come across anything like it!

@SissySpacekAteMyHamster buying a lamp is high on my list of solutions right now Grin

Are you sure it's not a bulb that just pulls out. A bit like this?

Does the glass bit screw off?

AdamantEve · 09/07/2020 18:32

Glass bit doesn’t come off. I’ve never been so challenged by a light before.
This is the bulb it takes:

This is the view of the bulb from the top (ignore huge amount of dust)

Black circle below the bulb is the pointy glass part. Just can’t figure out how the bulb comes out, has a sort of glass casing over it which somehow needs to be removed first but the little silver things holding it on have no give and i don’t want to be forcing it.

It’s very similar to one we had in a rental, same bulb type too.

With ours you could unscrew under the glass which would remove the (stupidly heavy) glass meaning we could reach the odd little cage in which sat the bulb.

Good luck!

Bufferingkisses · 09/07/2020 18:59

I had a similar bulb (different lamp) and it was sort of spring loaded. So you moved it to one side so the other side popped out then took it out from there. Sort of like you take a battery out? Might be worth a bit of gentle side to side action?

Fandanglethat · 09/07/2020 19:02

Spring loaded bulb mount. Grasp one end of the bulb between thumb and forefinger and push towards the other end and also upwards to remove it. If it doesn't give, try the other end.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 09/07/2020 19:52

How many MNers does it take to change a light bulb?

BobbieDraper · 09/07/2020 19:58

@SissySpacekAteMyHamster

Bahahahaha!

Sorry OP; I'm absolutely no help but had to laugh at the above.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 09/07/2020 20:08

I'm going to be no help. But I feel your pain. My led kitchen light went bang, I phoned my landlord and he said he would sort it. So I put a lamp in the kitchen. It stayed like that for 18 months 🤣

DistinguishedCarrot · 09/07/2020 20:11

The key to it is the little silver clips at the end of the glass tube. I have an up lighter and the silver clips turn to allow you to remove the glass cover, then you can get to the bulb.

saywhatwhatnow · 09/07/2020 20:15

I am way too overinvested in this thread.

AdamantEve · 09/07/2020 20:46

Right, lots of good suggestions here! I’m getting the baby to bed now and quite frankly, don’t want to be messing about with a light fitting at the end of a long day of forcing the children to at least pretend to do some school work. So I will balance on a chair tomorrow morning and have another go. I might even update the thread because this is the most interesting thing happening in my life at the moment!

OP posts:
AdamantEve · 10/07/2020 10:16

Update: can’t do it, giving up!

(MIGHT email landlord, via letting agent, therefore announcing to even more people I can’t change a bulb. Blush )

MaryJoAnna · 10/07/2020 10:23

The little silver clips at each end of the cover should have enough flex to bend upwards, like on a photo frame, which will release the cover.

Then push the lamp towards one end and the other end will pop up.
