Family pet, which creature is best?

We've had a cat previously but a bit wary now as we live next to a huge road. Not at all keen on dogs. Definitely not a rat. Can anyone recommend a good pet for our family? Ideally cuddly.

Cat in catproofed garden or catio

bit of an unusual one, but a hedgehog? They aren't cuddly in the typical sense, but a friend recently rescued one and it likes to sit on her lap in the evenings and be stroked. You can read more about owning one here

Chickens 🐓🐔

I know you said not rats, but... Rats

lilyfire · 08/07/2020 19:42

We have ferrets. Very furry and cute. Not very good at sitting on your lap as they are too busy investigating. Might be worth reading up about? There are usually rescue ones needing homes.

Pelleas · 08/07/2020 19:43

Avoid Sea Monkeys.

MrsIronfoundersson · 08/07/2020 19:45

Ooh lilyfire we are getting ferrets soon from a rescue! Just building their shed at the moment. I can't wait, they are gorgeous! We are all really looking forward to them.

QueenOfCatan · 08/07/2020 19:45

Rats would be my response in afraid! 3 chubby boys 🐀

milienhaus · 08/07/2020 19:45

Not that many animals other than cats and dogs are actually cuddly ... I know of a lovely house rabbit but not great with small children and you can’t pick them up.

Ylvamoon · 08/07/2020 19:45

Guinea pigs? They are quite sociable.

Twizbe · 08/07/2020 19:50

Budgies! Best pets ever. Very sociable, some can talk, lots of personality, and easy to care for.

I had one during my teen years and he was the best. He has such a huge personality.

HowFastIsTooFast · 08/07/2020 19:51

Not cuddly but DP's Sister and her kids just got a tortoise and the whole family is in love with him. Otherwise a rabbit or guinea pigs if you have garden space for a good sized hutch & run?

Geekster1963 · 08/07/2020 19:55

Guinea Pigs, we had them as children and they are lovely. We are going to get two soon.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/07/2020 19:57

Cat in a cat proof garden. Their amazing little animals and make you laugh with their funny ways.

Waitingforboristoletusfree · 08/07/2020 19:58

Not a rabbit. Also not sea monkeys. I recommend a dog 😊

Hairydilemma · 08/07/2020 20:00

Guinea pigs are the world’s best pets

Animum2 · 08/07/2020 20:03

Guinea Pigs!

minipie · 08/07/2020 20:03

Cat if you don’t mind cat proofing the garden

Guinea pig if you don’t mind boring (sorry piggie lovers!)

feelingverygrateful · 08/07/2020 20:13

I know you said not rats....but I would really recommend rats! They are the best pets ever. But make sure you go to a decent breeder, not a pet shop!

Also, definitely do not get rabbits. I have house rabbits and I adore them but they are not cuddly at all!

Scion286 · 08/07/2020 20:15

A rescue house cat. There’s lots of cats who can’t go outside in rescues.

Pixiedust49 · 08/07/2020 20:15

Guinea pigs ..... lovely pets. Not a bad bone in their body

nicky2512 · 08/07/2020 20:31

Agree with guinea pigs. We only have one left now but she’s a character and amazingly best of friends with our schnauzer!
I love to hear the squeaks every time I open the fridge.

Srictlybakeoff · 08/07/2020 20:33

Chickens aren’t very cuddly but they are a laugh a minute. And loads of great tasting eggs ( much better than shop bought)

nicky2512 · 08/07/2020 20:35

Our wee girl.

Family pet, which creature is best?
