Last year, I posted this thread in absolute desperation:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3638089-Desperately-need-help-with-my-scalp
Basically I had stubborn and longterm severe scaling of my scalp, diagnosed as probable scalp psoriasis. It looked awful and was uncomfortable. If you scroll down in that thread you can see the very long list of treatments I'd tried and the process of a referral to a dermatologist which didn't really help.
My scalp is now clear of scales and has been since March and I wanted to update in case this information helps anyone else.
On the back of the advice on my original thread I eventually gave olive oil another go but really went for it with it. I smothered a ton of good quality olive oil over my scalp and left it on over night. The next morning I was able to remove probably 70% of the scaling by putting a comb underneath the scales and gently rotating it to loosen them and it didn't bring too much hair with it. Left behind was one particularly stubborn patch of scales plus a very thin general layer of scales closest to my scalp that the olive oil couldn't get to. My scalp still felt a bit tight and uncomfortable.
A couple of weeks after this I went for an appointment with Caroline Reeve who is a trichologist relatively local to me. Using Mediceuticals products (which I'd never come across in my hunt for treatments) Caroline pretty much cleared my scalp in the process of that appointment as well as talking me through what had been happening with my scalp. Her knowledge and advice was far more useful than any I'd had from the dermatologists. She used a skin scope to examine my scalp and see what was needed and focus treatment on the problem areas. At the end of the appointment the scope showed that much of my scalp was clear.
My scalp felt a bit irritated by the end of the appointment but I took the Mediceuticals Scalp Kit away with me (three different products) and used them at home and within a fortnight my scalp was completely clear and had recovered from the scales removal and felt normal (I can't really explain it but basically light and clean instead of thick with scale).
It is absolutely wonderful after years of struggling with this to have had a clear scalp for four months. My hair has recovered from all the harsh prescribed treatments and is looking better than it has done for years.
Ugh - this sounds like an advert for these products. Its not really my intention but I just think they're worth a try for anyone else who is suffering with this condition. And if you're really struggling with your scalp I really do think a visit to a trichologist is hugely worthwhile.
