What do you like at a BBQ?

Planning a BBQ in a few weeks when our new garden is complete and keen to find out what people like to eat?

In my Tesco order I currently have burgers, sausages, beef kebabs, lamb kebabs and halloumi. Will probably also do a big bowl of pesto pasta and buns obviously.

Any other requests? There’s no veggies attending but I’d love some nice easy salad recipes if anyone has any suggestions

This is always a hit www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/korean-chilli-sesame-honey-chicken

Always do a potato salad too.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 08/07/2020 15:27

I'm all about the sides:

Slaw with an avocado dressing (instead of mayo)
Greek salad
Veg skewers
New potatoes with a mustard dressing
Some kind of fruit salsa (pineapple or mango work well)
Pimms or sangria or spritzers
Sunshine!

Piri-piri chicken, really good sausages, pork belly slices or ribs with a 5 spice marinade, a hunk of beef sirloin or butterflied leg of lamb, sometimes home made kebabs. Loads of salads - Delia’s pesto rice salad or couscous salad, mozzarella salad, courgette salad with courgettes done on bbq, griddled pepper salad, tomato and onion salad, green salad, maybe a broad been salad, potato salad, coleslaw. Nice bread. We don’t tend to do burgers as they tend to get left. We do like a nice burger, but would have them as a midweek supper rather than barbecued, and with ciabatta rolls rather than burger buns. p.s. We don’t do all of these every time!

Little slices of belly pork

thismeansnothing · 08/07/2020 16:13

Corn on the cob. With a bit of butter. They just taste the absolute best when they've been done on the BBQ.

DH does some nice prawn skewers. Think it's just a marinade of lemon juice garlic and oregano but they are so morish.

And obviously got to have a good burger. YUM

I have this saved on Pinterest for the summer 😀

@Turnedouttoes

Not read the whole thread, but check you don’t have guests with nut allergy as they won’t be able to eat pesto.

At BBQs my husbad (who cooks all the time at home, I never do) makes his own kebabs with either chicken or pork and makes some kind of lovely marinade. On the kebab skewers he adds large mushrooms and pieces of re, green and yellow pepper. We then have small round salad potatoes with butter, and a mixed salad.

We only ever hae burgers if they are homemade.

Watermelon and Feta salad. Slice a red onion and soak in lime juice, add chopped watermelon and feta, sprinkle mint leaves on top - delicious and looks lovely on the table.

allmycats · 08/07/2020 17:12

A lovely crispy salad with NO mayo. Lots of seasonings so that people can add their own. There are lots of people who can't eat creamy/milky dressings so why do people slather it on everything.

Willitneverend · 08/07/2020 17:16

Lamb and apricot kebabs.

hartof · 08/07/2020 17:20

Chicken and chorizo skewers

mollokoy · 08/07/2020 17:23

Plantain - got to have grilled plantain for a proper BBQ!

And jerk chicken of course. Pfft to piri piri. Grin

Pork belly slices marinated in nandos mango and lime sauce

Eminybob · 09/07/2020 06:17

Ooh I’ve just remembered something that DH does, he wraps a couple of red onions in foil and puts them in the coals while he’s cooking everything else.
Then they becomes these gorgeous sweet caramelised onions which are amazing on the burgers.

I'm all about nearly everything being ready to go so when people arrive things just need to come out of the fridge/oven I've hated that previously we've run a round loads rather than talking to our friends so now I tailor it to serving things where it's all good to go, food table is set with as much as possible laid out and the actual meat just needs to be cooked, salads out the fridge and done.

I've also had enough of peeing around with chicken on the bbq so do a cold dish of this. I also add some more buffet style foods to bulk out and cut down on the meat on the bbq so it's quicker for us to sit down so shoot me

Most recently for a crowd with no vegetarians we did

Antipasti meat and cheese platter
Veg crudités and dips
Homemade sausage rolls
Crusty bread with oils and butter

Coronation chicken (cold)
Bbqd sliced steaks with chimichurri dressing
Decent chorizo style sausages
Decent lamb burgers with tzatiki and harissa mayo
Decent beef burgers with sliced cheeses, sliced tomatoes, sliced gherkins and onions

Homemade coleslaw
Green salad (undressed)
Roasted Vegetable Couscous (bbc good food and delicious - makes loads)
Beef tomatoes, avocado and red onion salad
Small cubed roasted potatoes

That sweet potato salad looks lovely I'm going to give that a whirl thanks!

Impatientwino · 09/07/2020 06:54

I also bought a set of 5 fly net cover things from amazon which are great for bbqs!

PurBal · 09/07/2020 06:55

Steak. Top cap rump is the best. Cook it as one piece and then slice. Yum. I also like halloumi.

Impatientwino · 09/07/2020 06:56

When I go to other people's BBC's you'll find me in a corner with an icy cold beer eating as many sausages with onions ketchup as I possibly can Grin

ICouldBeTheOne · 09/07/2020 06:58

I'm easy...sausage in a hotdog bun, burger in a bap, nicely browned and soft onions, bit of coleslaw. Nice!

KatherineJaneway · 09/07/2020 07:00

Plenty of condiments and things like fresh tomatoes and lettuce for the burgers not forgetting crispy bacon and blue cheese.

Also like sides so I'd like to see potato salad, coleslaw and some salad.

mbosnz · 09/07/2020 08:55

@allImpatientwino

You'd love it at ours, every Sunday lunch that it's not raining, DH is out there doing saussies on the barbie, I'm frying onions in butter, buttering the bread, getting out the sauces and mustards.

One of the things we missed so much when we came over here, was on the weekend, buying a cheap as chips saussie in a bun from whichever community group was doing a fundraiser outside the hardware store, so we now do our own! Grin
